WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> had two bags of McDonald\u2019s delivered to the Oval Office on Monday by a DoorDash driver he tipped $100, using his favorite food and a reality TV flourish to promote a tax policy he says has meant big rebates for Americans who earn gratuities.<\/p>\n

Sharon Simmons, dressed in a \u201cDoorDash Grandma\u201d T-shirt, walked up to the Oval Office\u2019s exterior door and knocked as media cameras rolled. Trump popped out and said, \u201cHello. Nice to see you,\u201d before proclaiming, \u201cLook at this!\u201d and then, glancing toward a pack of nearby reporters, offering, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t look staged, does it?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was, of course. Making it onto the White House grounds alone requires obtaining prior permission and passing through security, while accessing the Oval Office \u2014 not to mention getting so close to the president \u2014 would have been impossible without additional screenings and background checks. <\/p>\n

Still, the White House has attempted to call more attention to a piece of the Trump-backed tax and spend package<\/a> approved last summer that allows Americans to temporarily deduct some federal taxes<\/a> from income earned on tips. It lets certain workers deduct up to $25,000, but phases out for those with higher incomes. <\/p>\n

Officials are intensifying the publicity effort ahead of Tax Day on Wednesday \u2014 even as the issue has been overshadowed for weeks by the war in Iran<\/a> that has raised gas prices and spooked financial markets, and more immediately by Trump\u2019s feud with Pope Leo XIV<\/a>. <\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s is a longtime favorite of the president \u2014 and fare he\u2019s used to political ends before. <\/p>\n

He famously ordered it<\/a>, along with vast piles of other fast food, to serve the visiting NCAA football champion Clemson Tigers in 2019 during his first term, when a government shutdown had reduced White House kitchen staff. Trump also staged one of the most memorable stops of his successful 2024 reelection campaign by visiting a Pennsylvania McDonald\u2019s restaurant, where he worked the fry station and took reporters\u2019 questions from the drive-thru window<\/a>. <\/p>\n

On Monday, Simmons, who DoorDash said was from Arkansas, recounted how the tax changes had helped reduce the amount of income she had to claim. Simmons subsequently told reporters she had earned more than $11,000 in tips a year. Exact figures on her savings were difficult to verify without Simmons\u2019 tax statement wasn\u2019t provided to reporters.<\/p>\n

Trump then asked, \u201cWould you like to do a little news conference with me?\u201d and had her stand awkwardly beside him as he took questions about his threats to blockade the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and his refusal to apologize to Pope Leo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The president eventually asked Simmons: \u201cI think you voted for me. Do you think?\u201d To which she responded, \u201cUm, maybe.\u201d Undaunted, Trump continued: \u201cI heard you\u2019re a great supporter. We appreciate it.\u201d <\/p>\n

When a reporter later asked if the White House was a good tipper, Simmons hesitated: \u201cUm … potentially.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWait,\u201d Trump crowed, reaching into his pocket for a $100 bill and handing it to Simmons with a grin. She took the money, laughed and finished, \u201cYes, very,\u201d as the president patted her on the back and beamed. <\/p>\n

Trump also invited Simmons and her husband to a UFC bout<\/a> he\u2019s helping to stage on the White House lawn to mark his 80th birthday in June. And he turned to Simmons again to press her on if she believes \u201cmen should play in women\u2019s sports\u201d \u2014 a frequent topic of his as he blasts Democrats for being too supportive of transgender rights.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI really don\u2019t have an opinion on that,\u201d Simmons replied, prompting Trump to push, \u201cI\u2019ll bet you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no,\u201d she insisted. \u201cI\u2019m here about no tax on tips.\u201d <\/p>\n

The White House later said that Trump personally delivered the food \u2014 consisting of cheeseburgers and fries \u2014 to West Wing staff.<\/p>\n
