Credit: AMNA<\/p>\n<p>Recent data from the \u201cIlios\u201d pension system confirms the severe financial pressure on Greek pensioners, revealing that nearly six out of every ten (58.75%) main retirement pensions are paid at an amount less than \u20ac1,000 (approx. $1,080) per month.<\/p>\n<p>The figures, analyzed by the Greek financial daily Naftemboriki, underscore the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekreporter.com\/2025\/05\/14\/greek-population-decline-pension-sustainability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immensity of the challenge<\/a> facing retirees, particularly those entering the system from the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>Pension disparity: Private vs. public sector<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights a significant disparity between new pensions from the public and private sectors, illustrating the impact of prolonged high unemployment and low wages in the private economy.<\/p>\n<p>The overall average main pension across all categories stood at \u20ac845.22 (approx. $912.84), while new private sector pensions average significantly lower at \u20ac770.23 (approx. $831.85). In contrast, new public sector pensions averaged \u20ac1,359.55 (approx. $1,468.31).<\/p>\n<p>This has resulted in a substantial gap of \u20ac589.32 (approx. $636.46) between the average new public and private sector main pensions. Specifically, 1,143,782 main retirement pensions\u2014representing 58.75% of the total\u2014were below \u20ac1,000 (approx. $1,080) gross.<\/p>\n<p>Pensioner population and demographics in Greece<\/p>\n<p>The number of pensioners in <a href=\"https:\/\/greekreporter.com\/greece\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Greece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Greece<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekreporter.com\/2024\/09\/07\/greece-pensioners-working-europe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continues to show a steady upward trend<\/a>, both monthly and annually. The total number of pensioners reached 2,517,412 in September 2025, an increase of 20,292 from September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 1,932,225 recipients of at least one main retirement pension, 53.27% are men. However, women account for the overwhelming majority of death\/survivor pensions at 90.95% of the total. More than half of the country\u2019s pensioners (54.4%) fall within the 66 to 80 age bracket.
