BEND, Ore. \u2014 A Bend photographer is challenging cultural perceptions of aging by spotlighting women over 40 through a portrait project designed to celebrate their experiences, resilience and self-expression.<\/p>\n
When Jennifer VanJaarsveld, owner of Jen Lee Photography<\/a>, began the 40 Over 40 project<\/a> a year ago, her goal was to celebrate women getting older in a way she feels does not happen in American culture.<\/p>\n “You kind of reach a certain age, especially as a woman, where you kind of fade into the background, especially in our culture. That just kind of makes me frustrated,”\u00a0VanJaarsveld said.<\/p>\n One of the models for the project, Lori Marshall, said she decided to have her picture taken to show her daughters that aging is powerful.<\/p>\n “Hopefully they’re at a point in their lives when they see these that they can look back when they’re in their 40s and realize the triumphs and the difficult things that they’ve been through and know that I’ve been through those as well.” Marshall said.<\/p>\n Marshall is also a make-up artist and did the make-up for most of the women photographed. She said one of the most inspiring parts of the shoot was seeing the women be vulnerable and express their true selves.<\/p>\n “Jen does such an amazing job at photographing you in your best light, in your best moments, as you want to be seen,” Marshall said.<\/p>\n Part of the photography process includes an interview with\u00a0VanJaarsveld, talking about all the things the women have learned through the years.<\/p>\n “What keeps you hopeful? What are your dreams? What are you most proud of? Things like that,” VanJaarsveld said. These questions are inspired by conversations adults often have with children. They’re also questions adults don’t often get to answer.<\/p>\n Included in the booking fee is a donation to the non-profit Saving Grace<\/a>, which supports survivors of partner violence. At the gallery event on Friday, VanJaarsveld gave Saving Grace $2,000.<\/p>\n The photos are still available to view in person at Iris & Stout<\/a>\u00a0in Bend.\u00a0They will be there until April 22. Then the photos will be moved to Tetherow and will be available to view starting 4:00 p.m. on April 22.<\/p>\n
