The New York Times<\/a>\u2019 new profile on Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos<\/a> is causing some critics to facepalm \u2014 including journalist Katie Couric<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Amid a completely bewildering<\/a> war with Iran that caused gas prices to spike<\/a>, which only accelerated the financial strain<\/a> many Americans were already feeling, Amy Chozick wrote a profile of the wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos<\/a> for The New York Times titled: \u201cSomeone Has to Be Happy. Why Not Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NYT is rage-baiting us,\u201d a user on Instagram Threads said<\/a> while sharing a screenshot of the article \u2014 and it seems that Couric resonated with that take.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi @amychozick \ud83d\udc4b\ud83c\udffb,\u201d Couric said in response to this post<\/a>, tagging the article\u2019s author. \u201cAre you allowed to refuse assignments? This feels, um, off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lots of users appreciated Couric\u2019s blunt response.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love @katiecouric \u2019s zero fucks era so much. \u2764\ufe0f,\u201d one Threads user said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Katie THE Couric questioned my journalistic integrity I would just quit and work in a wilderness store in Wyoming,\u201d another user joked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t read it,\u201d another user admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve heard enough about Lauren Sanchez to last the rest of my life. My first thought, though, was that this journalist should have written about the EX wife, MacKenzie Scott, who IS doing actual meaningful things. This current wife might be doing good things too but we can\u2019t see beyond all the glitz, photo ops, and the huge boobs and lips. Smh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chozick posited in her profile that S\u00e1nchez Bezos represents a new attitude for the uber-rich.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter years defined by financial crisis, pandemic lockdowns and moral earnestness,\u201d Chozick wrote. \u201cUnabashed rich-person exuberance is back with a Blue Origin bang, a Mar-a-Lago makeover of the White House and a Zuckerberg rap cover. The Bezos\u2019 marriage seems, at times, as much a cultural inflection point as a love story \u2014 the moment American money stopped apologizing and decided it might as well enjoy itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The journalist pointed out the stark contrast between the philanthropic styles of Bezos\u2019 first wife, MacKenzie Scott, and S\u00e1nchez Bezos. <\/p>\n

Scott\u2019s public image, Chozick wrote, is \u201cbookish, private and almost defiantly out of the spotlight\u201d as she quietly gave away \u201croughly $26 billion of her fortune.\u201d <\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez Bezos, however, \u201cembraces philanthropy, but also the pleasure that comes with wealth \u2014 the visibility, the proximity to power, the fashion, the fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bulk of the lengthy profile includes observations about S\u00e1nchez Bezos\u2019 unapologetic embrace of her opulent lifestyle.<\/p>\n

For instance, it seemed important to S\u00e1nchez Bezos that she make clear that she was friends with many of the couple\u2019s celebrity friends before Bezos entered the picture. <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople act like he\u2019s my new friend,\u201d S\u00e1nchez Bezos said of actor Leonardo DiCaprio. \u201cNo, I\u2019ve known Leo since I was 25. Twenty-five.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chozick also noted how S\u00e1nchez Bezos \u201cdoes not traffic in cynicism\u201d and seems to shrug off most of her public controversies. <\/p>\n

During a trip to an elementary school to read from her children\u2019s s book, \u201cThe Fly Who Flew to Space,\u201d S\u00e1nchez Bezos told the kids in attendance of her widely panned Blue Origins flight<\/a>: \u201cI went to space with Katy Perry\u2026 Yes! How fun is that? It was like a girls\u2019 trip to space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chozick wrote that S\u00e1nchez Bezos \u201cchoked up talking\u201d about the backlash to her Venice, Italy, wedding<\/a> that attracted A-listers and was estimated to cost<\/a> between 40 and 48 million euros. She said \u201cthe public didn\u2019t see\u201d intimate details like \u201cthe toasts by all their children; the high school friends of Mr. Bezos\u2019 whom nobody bothered to photograph,\u201d Chozick wrote.<\/p>\n

Chozick also highlighted that S\u00e1nchez Bezos is extremely proud of one of her hobbies. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing [S\u00e1nchez Bezos] wants people to know, it\u2019s that she is a helicopter pilot, a rarity in the notoriously male-dominated industry,\u201d Chozick wrote.<\/p>\n

But one of Chozick\u2019s more interesting observations was that S\u00e1nchez Bezos \u201cis breezy and agile at pivoting back to the fun topics\u201d and notes several times that the former journalist dodged any kind of question involving politics or her husband\u2019s controversies. <\/p>\n

When asked about the hundreds of layoffs at The Washington Post<\/a> in February, which is a newspaper owned by her husband, S\u00e1nchez Bezos got pretty vague.<\/p>\n
