{"id":584307,"date":"2026-04-14T20:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T20:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/584307\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T20:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T20:34:07","slug":"lena-dunham-explains-decision-to-write-about-girls-co-star-adam-driver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/584307\/","title":{"rendered":"Lena Dunham Explains Decision To Write About &#8216;Girls&#8217; Co-Star Adam Driver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/lena-dunham\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lena-dunham\" data-tag=\"lena-dunham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lena Dunham<\/a> is addressing her rocky, now-over professional and personal relationships with her former Girls co-star <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/adam-driver\/\" id=\"auto-tag_adam-driver\" data-tag=\"adam-driver\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Driver<\/a> in her new memoir <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/famesick\/\" id=\"auto-tag_famesick\" data-tag=\"famesick\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Famesick<\/a>, and explaining why she wrote about him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe two played the HBO series\u2019 main romantic, if troubled, couple, and Dunham suggests the turbulent depiction had nothing on real life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhile filming the couple\u2019s first sex scene in Season 1 of the 2012-2017 drama, Dunham, the show\u2019s creator, writer, star and director, says that \u201ccareful blocking went out the window\u201d when Driver \u201churled me this way and that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cStunned, I couldn\u2019t speak for a moment,\u201d she writes, \u201cunsure of what had happened \u2014 had I lost directorial authority, allowed the scene to go off the rails, not given proper instructions? Would I be removed from my command post immediately?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe continues, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t that I felt violated \u2014 and I also wouldn\u2019t know if I had, as there was little in my sexual life that I hadn\u2019t allowed to happen, and for no pay. But I felt that something intimate, confusing and primal had played out in a scenario I was meant to control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a new exclusive <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/lena-dunham-adam-driver-honest-famesick-exclusive-119491\" target=\"_blank\">interview with People<\/a>, Dunham explains her decision to write about Driver. \u201cIt was an attempt to capture that [relationship] in an honest way, and also really talk about how much being around this very talented, charismatic, complex, and powerful person affected me in ways that were really positive and in ways that were a bit harder,\u201d she tells People.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDunham continues that the \u201cgoal was never to make Adam seem like he was in any way the outlier of the show, but just to talk about how complex and confusing those first experiences of trying to be a boss were.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cFor better or worse,\u201d Dunham tells People, \u201cit was all of our first jobs. I think Adam went on a very specific ride because he had the ride of the show and then also the ride of becoming a major movie star at the same time. So he was on these two tracks, and he\u2019s a very, very serious work-focused private person. So I have a lot of empathy for that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDunham, just 24 when Girls began, says in her book that Driver, who went on to considerable film stardom in the Star Wars franchise, would get so impatient with Dunham during rehearsals that he once threw a chain at the wall next to where she was standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI remember doing a fight scene with Adam and how scary it was to meet someone so totally present with such absence,\u201d writes Dunham. \u201cLate one night, as we practiced lines in my trailer, I found that mine were suddenly gone. I knew I\u2019d written them. I\u2019d known them only minutes before. But when I opened my mouth, all that came out was a stammer \u2014 until finally, Adam screamed, \u2018FUCKING SAY SOMETHING\u2019 and hurled a chair at the wall next to me. \u2018WAKE THE FUCK UP,\u2019 he told me. \u2018I\u2019M SICK OF WATCHING YOU JUST STARE.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDunham kept quiet at the time about the chair throwing, and rationalized Driver\u2019s behavior as actorly temperament. \u201cI reasoned that the intensity of his anger at me, anger that could make him spit and throw things, was proportionate to the intensity of our creative connection,\u201d Dunham writes. \u201cOne day in his dressing room, as I apologized for a perceived slight I couldn\u2019t remember committing, he got close to my face and hissed, \u2018Never forget that I know you. I really fucking know you.\u2019 \u2018What do you know?\u2019 I yelped. \u2018You don\u2019t go to parties. You love animals. And you hate being whispered about.\u2019 And he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDriver, as Dunham describes him, could be \u201cshort-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing,\u201d and once punched a hole in his dressing room wall because he \u201chated his new haircut.\u201d Still, she says, he could also \u201cbe protective, loving even,\u201d and one week came to her apartment every night when she was feeling particularly anxious. As romantic vibes mounted, Driver said, before his final visit, \u201cI\u2019m warning you, if I come up, I\u2019m not leaving this time,\u201d which Dunham did not take issue with, at least initially.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI crouched at the window,\u201d she writes, \u201cwatching him park his bike, pull out his phone, and dial. But I didn\u2019t answer. It felt as simple as ignoring your doorbell, as pretending to be asleep, as impossible as stopping your blood from flowing. But some part of me knew \u2014 some wise part of me, some bold part of me \u2014that if we crossed whatever boundary we were threatening to cross, the return to work would be tinged with humiliation, that I\u2019d be minimizing any authority I still had, and that, however it went, my heart \u2014 bruised but improbably not yet broken \u2014 would crack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhen Driver later called to announce his engagement to his now-wife, Dunham says she was heartbroken even though such a feeling was \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI was his scene partner, sure \u2014 and so when we were in a scene, his attention was piercing, his presence all-consuming,\u201d she writes. \u201cBut in life? It would never be me who kept him in line. I didn\u2019t have the chops. Even at work, I couldn\u2019t do it, in the one place I was meant to make the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Girls creator finishes her revelations about Driver by writing that the two cried during their final scene together in the series. \u201cI hope you know I\u2019ll always love you,\u201d Dunham quotes Driver as saying after filming wrapped. \u201cWho knows,\u201d she writes, \u201cmaybe I\u2019d write him new parts. We would tell new stories. We would laugh at the way things had been, and smile at the way they were now.
