Disgraced former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore dodged jail time and was sentenced to just probation Tuesday over a dramatic stalking incident involving his ex-mistress<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old ex-Wolverines head coach and married dad of three walked into court with his wife, Kelli Moore, before landing the slap-on-the-wrist sentence of 18 months probation from Judge Cedric Simpson in Washtenaw County Court.<\/p>\n

After the hearing, a somber Moore hugged his wife, as she rubbed his back with her hand.<\/p>\n

Moore had pleaded down last month<\/a> to two misdemeanors involving him showing up at the home of ex-assistant and mistress Paige Shiver<\/a>, 32, and threatening to kill himself when she broke things off.<\/p>\n

Moore, donning a blue suit and tie for court, thanked his wife for \u201cstanding by me\u201d in a brief statement to the judge before he was handed the sentence.<\/p>\n

Simpson said he didn\u2019t believe the crime warranted jail, but he warned Moore he wouldn\u2019t hesitate to throw him behind bars if he violated probation. <\/p>\n

The judge also said he didn\u2019t want the sentence to diminish what Shiver went through.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had no right to do what you did,\u201d Simpson told the onetime revered coach. \u201cI know that [Shiver] was placed in fear. It was a traumatic experience that day for you. It was certainly a traumatic experience for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had no right to spread your pain to her,\u201d the judge continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where your wife, Kelli, finds her strength,\u201d Simpson added as the spouse stoically looked on from the courtroom gallery. \u201cYou, sir, took her for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski didn\u2019t ask for a jail sentence, saying she would rely on the judge\u2019s judgement.<\/p>\n

But she did tell the jurist, \u201cThere was a young woman who was deeply impacted by the defendant\u2019s choices on Dec. 10 last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s lawyer, Ellen Michaels, said her client had taken responsibility for his actions, sought mental-health treatment and refocused himself on his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince this incident, Sherrone has engaged in counseling, gained insight into his life \u2026 recentered himself around his family and taken responsibility, expressing genuine remorse,\u201d Michaels said, asking for a no-jail sentence.<\/p>\n

Moore had faced up to five years behind bars on the more serious counts he was initially charged with: home invasion and stalking.<\/a><\/p>\n

But he pleaded down to the lesser crimes of malicious use of a telecommunications device and trespassing, which came with a total maximum sentence of seven months behind bars for both.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors claimed that Moore \u2014 who was paid $5.5 million yearly for his coaching gig \u2014 bombarded his younger paramour with texts and calls before showing up to her home Dec. 10, grabbing her butter knives and scissors and threatening to use them to kill himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to kill myself. I\u2019m going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You\u2019ve ruined my life,\u201d prosecutors claimed Moore told Shiver at the time.<\/p>\n

The dramatic incident came after Shiver fessed up to the school about the affair and decided to end things with the coach.<\/p>\n

Moore was then canned after just two seasons with the team for having an \u201cinappropriate relationship\u201d with his underling.<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s wife called 911 at one point <\/a>after his termination fearing he was \u201cgoing to hurt himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Simpson said prosecutors acted properly by allowing Moore to plead to the lesser charges on the grounds their investigation didn\u2019t ultimately bear out the more serious stalking charges, since Shiver had engaged in a series of phone conversations with Moore after she claimed she cut off contact.<\/p>\n

While Shiver, in a letter to the judge, asked for the \u201cstrictest sentence,\u201d Simpson said, \u201cI don\u2019t believe as I look at the entirety of this case that incarceration would be an appropriate sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He did give a stern warning to Moore not to contact Shiver in any way or speak about her online, asking Moore: \u201cAm I clear on that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d Moore responded.<\/p>\n

Moore is due back in court Oct. 13, 2027, for a review of his time on probation.<\/p>\n

The judge said the defendent must continue mental health treatment during that time.<\/p>\n
