ALPNENA \u2013 Due to recent extreme rainfall and significant groundwater saturation, the City of Alpena\u2019s sanitary sewer collection system and wastewater treatment plant are currently experiencing capacity issues.<\/p>\n
In an effort to manage the excess flow and reduce strain on the system, the wastewater treatment plant is temporarily bypassing a portion of the treatment process. As a result, partially treated wastewater is being discharged into the Thunder Bay River.<\/p>\n
Out of an abundance of caution, residents and visitors are advised to avoid recreational use of the Thunder Bay River and surrounding areas until further notice. This includes wading, boating or fishing. If you do come into contact with the water, we recommend washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer. <\/p>\n
It is critical at this time that all residents and businesses to immediately reduce water usage due to current conditions within the sanitary sewer collection system. This includes all City of Alpena and Charter Township of Alpena water and sewer customers.<\/p>\n
Reminder:<\/p>\n
Limit water use to essential needs only, including:<\/p>\n
\u2013 Flushing toilets<\/p>\n
\u2013 Basic sanitation (handwashing, minimal hygiene)<\/p>\n
\u2013 Cooking-related water use<\/p>\n
Please temporarily refrain from:<\/p>\n
Running dishwashers<\/p>\n
\u2013 Taking long showers or baths<\/p>\n
\u2013 Doing laundry<\/p>\n
\u2013 Any non-essential water usage that drains into the sewer system<\/p>\n
The City is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions improve.<\/p>\n
