AOL upholds a rigorous editorial process to ensure what we publish is fair, accurate and trustworthy.

When those first few days of spring hit, there is nothing better than opening all the windows in your home to feel the fresh air inside, airing out months and months worth of winter stuffiness. Unfortunately, that high doesn’t last very long at my house.

It’s not long after those first few days of warmer weather arrive that the sneezing, congestion and itchy, watery eyes start for my oldest and myself. So while I love the fresh air inside, I do know that it comes at a cost.

We are very lucky that our pollen allergies are nothing more than a nuisance, some discomfort and irritation but neither of us have had serious reactions. If that were the case, our approach would be much more strict.

If you deal with seasonal allergies the way we do in my house, it’s more than just some medication and crossed fingers. It’s a full routine of cleaning, laundry, hand-washing, etc., all that come with new routines we need to adopt each spring to keep everyone healthy and safe. This is especially true for my six-year-old who could never simply stay inside when the weather warms up.

Here’s what we do to make sure we make it through the tree pollen months (March – May where I live) with as few puffy eyes and sneeze attacks as possible.

Shower every night before bed to wash pollen off hair and skin

Change clothes after spending time outdoors

Wash face and hands thoroughly after being outside

Keep pets clean if they’ve been outside

Check daily pollen counts and adjust plans

Wear hats and sunglasses outdoors to protect eyes

Another key part of our routine is medication, but that’s after many discussions with our allergist about lifestyle and symptoms. You should always consult a doctor when it comes to medications, and not take advice from the internet. So we’ll skip right to the main event: Cleaning. That means both our home and ourselves. We give a whole new meaning to spring cleaning, and these are some of the absolute must-haves to get us through.

I still open my windows sometimes. I always check the pollen counts first and pay attention to how breezy it is, and I’m always prepared to clean. Pollen will settle on floors, carpets, bedding and just about every surface you can imagine. Below are the items we use to help allow us to open the windows on occasion.

This vacuum, another staple in my home, is especially helpful during allergy season because of the HEPA filtration system that traps dust, pollen and other allergens instead of releasing them back into the air while you clean.

Explore More Buying Options

An often over-looked area to clean during allergy season is the car. A dustbuster, like this AOL-favorite from Black+Decker makes for easy clean ups in the car. The slim nozzle and crevice tool really help to get into tight spaces where allergens can collect.

Explore More Buying Options

This small air purifier is great for allergy sufferers because is uses a 3-stage filtration system that captures up to 99.97% of airborne particles like pollen, dust and pet dander. This is the one we use in our home, in each of the bedrooms.

There is a lot of handwashing and bathing happening at our house in the springtime and unfortunately for most of us, we have sensitive skin, too! This Ultimate Soothing Duo from Pipette, however, has been a huge help for both my kids eczema-prone skin and my dry, cracked hands. The Calming Balm is gentle enough, I even put is on their irritated noses from too much wiping.

We use this simple, plant-based detergent to help avoid skin sensitivities, which is extra important during allergy season when our reactions are heightened. We do A LOT of extra laundry, with multiple outfits in a day and frequent sheet changes, so this Citrus Grove option is a refreshing scent.

With allergies comes dryness and itchiness, and in my house, that also means bloody noses. This Levoit Dual Smart Humidifier has been one of the biggest helpers to stop my son’s bloody noses.

Vaseline is sort of the wonder drug at our house during allergy season. We use it on everything from dry lips to irritate skin from nose wiping and blowing. It’s a good barrier to keep skin protected while it works on healing.

Explore More Buying Options

Wearing sunglasses is a great way to add extra protection to your eyes. The shades provide an additional shield for pollen particles floating in the air that can irritate skin and eyes.

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner is our top pick for hardwood floors and comes recommended by several of the experts for its gentle ingredients and cleaning abilities. It’s also Safer Choice-certified, meaning it meets the EPA’s environmental and health standards.

Explore More Buying Options

If you’re like me and just can’t help yourself opening the windows every once in a while, I can’t recommend this spin mop and bucket enough. It’s the best one we’ve tested to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Heading back to the car for a moment, this car cleaning putty is great to use on all the areas the dustbuster just can’t seem to reach. I love it especially for cup holders where my kids keep all types of treasures.

We go through boxes and boxes of tissues because despite all our best efforts, there’s still plenty of nose wiping. The red, irritated skin under noses (for both kids and adults) is uncomfortable and annoying and a nice soft tissue can really make a difference.

[34
97,256144,256143,238216,70562,12655
0":"post-585140","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-pollen-allergies","10":"tag-pollen-counts","11":"tag-spring-cleaning","12":"tag-warmer-weather","13":"tag-windows
["GET
