Upgraded to an ATP 500 last year, the BMW Open by Bitpanda is the first of four German tournaments on the season\u2019s ATP Tour calendar. This year\u2019s field is loaded, with several prominent names on the docket for Day 3. Among them is Joao Fonseca, one of the most widely followed names in the sport. As always, we at LWOT have previews and predictions for all matches on the ATP Munich slate. But who will advance?<\/p>\n

ATP Munich Day 3 Predictions
\nBen Shelton vs Alexander Blockx<\/p>\n

Head-to-Head: first meeting<\/p>\n

Although No. 2 seed Ben Shelton<\/a> does not favor the clay as his best surface, he has nearly an identical winning percentage on the dirt as he does on grass. The American slogged through a three-set first-round win over compatriot Emilio Nava but should be wary of Wednesday\u2019s matchup against Alexander Blockx. The 21-year-old currently holds a career-high ranking of No. 71 and is coming off a week in which he advanced from qualies to reach the Monte Carlo Round of 16. I expect the young Belgian to continue making noise with an ATP Munich upset.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Blockx in 3<\/p>\n

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Fabian Marozsan<\/p>\n

Head-to-Head: Tsitsipas 1-0 Marozsan<\/p>\n

In the final first-round matchup on Day 3, a struggling Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/a> faces Fabian Marozsan. The Greek has just two wins since mid-February, however, he has squared off against only one opponent outside the top 40 in that span. I\u2019m a longtime fan of Marozsan\u2019s game. The big-serving Hungarian attacks off both wings and has the arsenal to compete with anyone, but consistency remains his issue. What Tsitsipas will we see in Munich? Lately, it\u2019s easier to expect the worst and fade the former World No. 3.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Marozsan in 3<\/p>\n

Flavio Cobolli vs Zizou Bergs<\/p>\n

Head-to-Head: Cobolli 2-1 Bergs<\/p>\n

It has been an up-and-down year for the young Italian Flavio Cobolli, but a title in Acapulco paired with a strong end to the 2025 season has him sitting at No. 16 in the world. The clay has been Cobolli\u2019s favorite and most fruitful surface, and a strong result in Munich could go a long way for his Roland Garros prep. Zizou Bergs will be opposite the Italian. Playing some of the best tennis of his career, Bergs\u2019 variety and willingness to run down every ball are perfect for the clay. However, Cobolli will likely be too much for the Belgian in the end.<\/p>\n

Luciano Darderi vs Vit Kopriva<\/p>\n

Head-to-Head: Darderi 2-3 Kopriva<\/p>\n

Luciano Darderi is about as close as you can get to a clay-court specialist in 2026. In fact, at World No. 21, he is undoubtedly the highest-ranked specialist in the world. Don\u2019t believe me? Check out his career splits: hard 12-32 (27.3%), clay 53-24 (68.8%), grass 4-7 (36.4%). Darderi is 10-4 on the dirt this season and should have no problem dispatching Vit Kopriva.<\/p>\n

Joao Fonseca vs Arthur Rinderknech<\/p>\n

Head-to-Head: Fonseca 1-0 Rinderknech<\/p>\n

It does not matter where it happens; when Joao Fonseca<\/a> plays tennis, the Brazilian faithful come out in full force. The 19-year-old has had some ups and downs in the early portion of his career, but is playing great tennis of late, posting an 8-3 record since the beginning of March. Those three losses have come at the hands of the top three players in the world, respectively. Fonseca took down Rinderknech in a tight three-setter last week in Monte Carlo. To me, this is truly a toss-up. When in doubt, back the player with the stronger fan support, as that could be the difference in a back-and-forth match.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Fonseca in 3<\/p>\n
