MINNEAPOLIS — Lindsay Whalen better be ready.

Now, as an assistant coach on the Minnesota Lynx, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer and four-time WNBA champion is going to be peppered with questions from the team’s newest point guard.

The Lynx selected TCU’s Olivia Miles No. 2 overall in Monday night’s WNBA Draft, and during her introductory press conference Wednesday, she expressed her excitement to learn from one of the best point guards ever to play the game.

“Get ready, because you’re going to be tired of me in a little bit,” Miles joked to Whalen, who was in attendance. “I’m gonna ask so many questions and just be open-minded.”

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said Monday that Whalen feels Miles is a way better point guard than she was, but Miles knows that’ll be something she’ll have to prove on the court.

“I literally was looking at Lindsay Whalen highlights the other night just to see what kind of dimes you were throwing,” Miles said. “Refresh my memory. So it was amazing to be invited to be coached by such an amazing player.”

Passing, playmaking and leadership. Those were some of the qualities Reeve saw in Miles that Whalen brought to the court each night. Now, the torch is being passed to Miles

“This is the first real point guard we’ve had since Lindsay Whalen,” Reeve said Monday night.

Reeve said Miles was one of two players in Monday’s draft with “generational skills,” and could immediately improve a backcourt that was already pretty explosive. Guards Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride also remain on the roster and have been major contributors for the Lynx, averaging 13.6 and 14.2 points per game, respectively, last season.

“I think it’s special to have the opportunity to look up to such amazing, strong women who have truly seen it all,” Miles said. “I can’t wat, again, to be a sponge and soak up all of their information and everything that they have to share. Nothing they’ll say will be too much for me, and I can’t wait to to take it in and follow in their footsteps and carry my responsibility forward.”

Miles averaged 19.6 points per game with the Horned Frogs last season, while shooting 48.1% from the field and 25.1% beyong the arc. She also recorded 7.2 rebounds per game, 6.6 assists and 1.8 steals. She also finished her career with the third-most triple-doubles (12) in women’s NCAA history, trailing only Sabrina Ionescu and Caitlin Clark.

She spent the first four years of her collegiate career at Notre Dame and passed on declaring for the draft last year to play one season with TCU. Miles spoke Wednesday about that decision and how it helped prepare her to take the next step.

“I learned that I could be pretty resilient amongst a lot of people who were upset at me for doing so,” Miles said. “I think twofold, I learned my self-worth and to bet on yourself in moments where it may seem risky, or it may not work out in your favor. I mean, look where I’m at now, and I’m so grateful that I waited one more year or else I wouldn’t have been here.”

Now, she joins a championship-caliber team that has visions of returning to the dynasty that won four WNBA championships in seven years.

“I know it won’t be easy and I’m not looking for it to be easy,” Miles said. “It’s going to be intense, and I’ve been looking and searching for that kind of culture for a long time, and I can’t wait to get the most out of my ability.”

Miles finished her collegiate career with the third-most triple-doubles (12) in women’s NCAA history, trailing only Sabrina Ionescu…

[73
99,434
post-586163","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wnba","tag-sports","tag-wnba
["GET
