Sydney Sweeney<\/a> and her infamous jeans dominated headlines last summer for all the wrong reasons \u2013 and almost one year on, she\u2019s referenced the controversy in a brand new ad. <\/p>\n

The Euphoria star sparked a public backlash<\/a> last July over an American Eagle ad poster featuring Sweeney wearing jeans and a denim jacket with the tagline: \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Genes\u201d, however the last word was crossed out and replaced with \u2018jeans\u2019.<\/p>\n

Many criticised the use of the slogan, highlighting that the phrase \u201cgreat genes\u201d has historically been used in the language of eugenicists<\/a>, who believe the human race can be improved genetically by selective breeding. It also faced flak for applying the slogan to an ad starring Sydney Sweeney, who is white, blonde and considered to be a Gen Z pin-up girl.<\/p>\n

Despite the discourse and debate<\/a> that raged on for weeks after the ad\u2019s release, Sweeney has now seemingly given a nod to the controversial campaign in a new clip for American Eagle \u2013 this time, promoting their jean shorts. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat brand am I wearing?\u201d Sweeney says in the ad, before we see her walk along the beach and toss her blonde bob about in between close-ups of her shorts. <\/p>\n

She then smiles at the camera and says: \u201cYeah. That one.\u201d The line appears to be reference to her controversial \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u201d campaign. <\/p>\n

The brand will donate all proceeds from custom pieces to Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that provides free and confidential mental health and crisis support through text messaging. <\/p>\n

The backlash to the original ad resulted in MAGA supporters coming to Sweeney\u2019s defence<\/a>, while President Donald Trump praised the campaign when he found out that she was a registered Republican, writing on social media that she had \u201cthe \u2018HOTTEST\u2019 ad out there\u201d.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Following the initial campaign, American Eagle doubled down<\/a> on the controversial tag line, saying in August: \u201c\u2018Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u2019 is and always was about the jeans.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer jeans. Her story. We\u2019ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n

The same month, Sweeney declined to comment<\/a> on the controversy when interviewed byThe Wall Street Journal. However, in December, she finally spoke out about the campaign, admitting that her initial silence \u201cwidened the divide\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was honestly surprised by the reaction,\u201d she stated. \u201cI did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don\u2019t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren\u2019t true. Anyone who knows me knows that I\u2019m always trying to bring people together.
