{"id":587654,"date":"2026-04-16T11:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T11:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/587654\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T11:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T11:50:09","slug":"yellowstone-wolf-steals-sign-warning-tourists-about-hungry-grizzly-bears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/587654\/","title":{"rendered":"Yellowstone Wolf Steals Sign Warning Tourists About Hungry Grizzly Bears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Visitors in Yellowstone National Park are expected to treat the landscape with respect and to refrain from taking or treading on anything they find there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">However, how can anyone expect a tourist to hold that standard when the park\u2019s residents won\u2019t do it themselves?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Taylor Rabe, a biological science technician working in Yellowstone, was monitoring the Junction Butte wolf pack on Monday when she noticed one of its puppies running across the road with a long, straight stick in its mouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Rabe said she grabbed her spotting scope for a closer look.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The young wolf had somehow managed to dislodge and carry off a sign put up by Yellowstone\u2019s bear management team warning people about grizzlies in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201c(The sign) was set up to warn visitors to stay out of an area due to an active carcass with grizzly bears on it,\u201d Rabe said when she\u00a0<a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXFbh_4kq4L\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXFbh_4kq4L\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">posted the video on social media<\/a>. \u201cClearly, this pup had better things to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kid Stuff<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Rabe has spent the last 13 winters studying wild wolves as part of the Yellowstone Wolf Project, which has been conducting year-round observation and study of the park\u2019s wolves since they were reintroduced in 1995.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Based on her extensive experience and familiarity with Yellowstone\u2019s wolves, Rabe could tell the sign-stealing miscreant was one of the puppies from the Junction Butte pack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Almost a year old, these pups have survived the winter and wandered away from the adults in the pack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThis happens often, especially when the pups are interested in sticking around an area for a longer period of time,\u201d\u00a0Rabe wrote.\u00a0\u201cUsually, it has to do with something extra smelly, like an old carcass, or maybe something really fun, like a pond full of salamanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Every animal seems to go through a rebellious phase in their youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolves have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/11\/22\/wolves-are-clever-but-are-they-really-smart-enough-to-use-tools\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">known to use tools<\/a>, but this young wolf didn\u2019t seem interested in anything but carrying it around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Rabe believes the sign theft was just a young wolf having a mischievous moment with an incredible stick it found, something any domestic dog could could do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThis young male found this really fun and interesting toy as he made his way through the valley,\u201d she said. \u201cWhatever the cause, when the pups are away from their elders, this is when we see them being extra mischievous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Always The Young Ones<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">John Baughman, director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department from 1996 to 2002, got the top job right after wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It was one of the most contentious moments of his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI was deputy director when wolves came back,\u201d he\u00a0told Cowboy State Daily.\u00a0\u201cIt was kind of like Republicans and Democrats. You were either pro-wolf or anti-wolf. Nobody in-between.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">When wolf incidents reached his desk, they were primarily damage claims from ranchers who had lost livestock to predation, an ongoing issue in the areas adjacent to Yellowstone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He couldn\u2019t recall any reports of\u00a0theft by wolf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThe main problems we had with wolves were livestock and divisiveness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Baughman deferred to Rabe\u2019s interpretation of why a wolf would steal a sign, saying she and the other scientists working with the Yellowstone Wolf Project have \u201cprobably seen things that most people wouldn&#8217;t be aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">However, he wasn\u2019t surprised that it was a young wolf that ran off with the sign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In his experience, it&#8217;s always the young wolves that pushed boundaries and stick their noses where they aren&#8217;t wanted or expected to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cWhen there were sightings of wolves (outside Yellowstone), it was almost always younger wolves,\u201d he said. \u201cThey&#8217;d end up roaming into other states, the Red Desert, and eastern Wyoming, looking for whatever they\u2019re looking for beyond \u2018the dead line.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The Lone Wolf&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolves can be self-sufficient very early on, usually when they\u2019re only a few months old, but prefer to live and hunt within the hierarchy of an established pack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">While the \u201clone wolf\u201d is a longstanding cultural motif of stoicism and self-reliance, most wolves will only go it alone temporarily. They\u2019ll either search for a new pack or try to establish their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A lone wolf is also putting its mortality on the line. In addition to finding enough food to sustain themselves, lone wolves are at a higher risk of being killed by other wolves or humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The Junction Butte pack is one of the most famous and popular wolf populations in Yellowstone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Their territory covers a large swatch of the Lamar Valley up to the park\u2019s northern boundary in Montana, and they frequent areas where they can be easily seen and watched by tourists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yellowstoneguidelines.com\/whats-new\/yellowstone-winter-wolf-update.html\" title=\"https:\/\/www.yellowstoneguidelines.com\/whats-new\/yellowstone-winter-wolf-update.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">According to Yellowstone guidelines<\/a>, the Junction Butte pack had 15 wolves going into the 2025-2026 winter season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It tends to be a large pack and produces many pups in the spring, but still maintains a somewhat precarious existence with how they wander.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In September 2025, a 2.5-year-old female wolf from the Junction Butte pack,\u00a0<a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/09\/23\/fans-morn-popular-yellowstone-wolf-reportedly-killed-by-hunter\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/09\/23\/fans-morn-popular-yellowstone-wolf-reportedly-killed-by-hunter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">1479F, was legally shot\u00a0<\/a>by a hunter in Montana after straying beyond the boundaries of Yellowstone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The young wolf had become a beloved sight among wolf enthusiasts, and news of her loss sparked strong emotions and controversy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201c(She was) always on the go, nothing stopped her,\u201d wildlife photographer Deby Dixon told Cowboy State Daily after her death. \u201cShe was independent and always on patrol, and she was a great babysitter for the pups this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">&#8220;She was one of the few wolves in the park that would walk right through a crowd of people to reach her destination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Many wolf watchers find independence and a brazen attitude as admirable qualities in a beloved wolf, but they were also among the factors that indirectly led to 1479F\u2019s early death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Lone wolves can survive on their own, but can just as easily find an early death, by bite or bullet.<\/p>\n<p>Read The Signs<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">After carrying and chewing on his special stick for a time, Rabe observed the young sign-stealing wolf until he abandoned his new toy and rushed to rejoin the adults of the Junction Butte pack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">There\u2019s no indication that Yellowstone\u2019s rangers cited the young wolf for theft and property damage, as would be expected for any tourist who committed such a brazen act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolves are protected, so long as they remain within Yellowstone\u2019s boundaries. Once they step outside the park, they can be legally killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Montana hunters and trappers\u00a0<a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/03\/07\/after-289-wolves-killed-in-montana-last-year-bills-push-for-more-hunting\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/03\/07\/after-289-wolves-killed-in-montana-last-year-bills-push-for-more-hunting\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">killed 289 wolves in 2024<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The Montana Legislature has tried to pass bills to extend wolf hunting and trapping seasons by up to three months, but has yet to pass any changes to that policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolf advocates have\u00a0<a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2022\/08\/09\/lawsuit-could-halt-wolf-hunts-in-wyoming-montana-idaho\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2022\/08\/09\/lawsuit-could-halt-wolf-hunts-in-wyoming-montana-idaho\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">tried to extend protections for wolves<\/a>\u00a0beyond the park\u2019s boundaries, but those efforts also haven\u2019t manifested in any policy changes in Wyoming, Montana, or Idaho.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">On the federal level, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Pet and Livestock Protection Act\u00a0<a class=\"outlook-break-word-in-links\" href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/12\/26\/house-passes-bill-to-delist-wolves-co-sponsored-by-hageman\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/12\/26\/house-passes-bill-to-delist-wolves-co-sponsored-by-hageman\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">(H.R. 845) to delist the gray wolf<\/a>\u00a0under the Endangered Species Act in December 2025. It was cosponsored by U.S. Rep.
