A quick glance at any red carpet during awards season told the same story over and over: famous people, particularly A-list women<\/a>, are getting smaller. And, whether accurate or not, the perception in 2026 is that everyone\u2014everyone\u2014in Hollywood is on Ozempic. Or Mounjaro. Or Wegovy. Or any of the other myriad medication brands in the GLP-1 agonist drug class.<\/p>\n As celebrities continue to shrink, often far beyond what medical standards consider a \u201chealthy\u201d weight, it\u2019s impossible not to wonder: Are people still taking GLP-1s, even after dropping so many pounds? And what risks would this pose?<\/p>\n The Shrinking Stars of Hollywood<\/p>\n Even as insiders and outside observers alike whisper about the widespread use of GLP-1s, relatively few famous people actually talk about taking them.<\/p>\n There are a few stars openly talk about their experiences on medication: Oprah<\/a>, Amy Schumer<\/a>, and Serena Williams<\/a>, to name a few\u2014and there are very few, and even fewer who aren\u2019t financially affiliated with a company producing GLP-1s.<\/p>\n Get a First Look<\/p>\n Sign up to receive news and updates from The Looker<\/p>\n As the drugs go mainstream, many people who could be medically categorized as \u201cnormal\u201d or \u201cunderweight\u201d according to their body mass index and therefore not considered eligible for prescriptions are nevertheless seeking them. (The concept of BMI itself is not without controversy; many experts dispute its value<\/a> as an accurate measurement of an individual\u2019s health.)<\/p>\n Layla Taylor of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has spoken at length about her dependence on GLP-1s.<\/p>\n Layla Taylor, a 25-year-old influencer and model on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, initially got on the medication<\/a> to shed the \u201cstubborn weight\u201d that she had struggled to lose.<\/p>\n A year later, the 5-foot-9 star weighed mere 99 pounds, but continued taking the drug.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople don\u2019t talk about how addicting this is,\u201d she confessed<\/a> during season four\u2019s final episode, \u201cand how hard it is to get off.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever be small enough in my head, and I know that it\u2019s affecting me, and like I\u2019m so exhausted all the time because I don\u2019t eat, and my body hurts every night when I go to bed,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cAnd I know that it\u2019s going too far, and I\u2019m taking it too far, but I, like, can\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think that we have noticed that a lot of people are getting smaller,\u201d Dr. Thea Gallagher, a clinical psychologist at NYU Langone Health, told me. <\/p>\n After a decade of many different body types getting public representation, Hollywood is moving towards the \u201cheroin chic\u201d body ideal of the \u201890s. \u201cIt has an impact on people, on what they think is beautiful and what they want to look like themselves,\u201d Gallagher said.<\/p>\n \u201cThinness has historically been idealized in the entertainment and fashion industries,\u201d said Dr. Priya Jaisinghani, a triple board-certified physician, endocrinologist, and obesity medicine expert, and a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health.<\/p>\n Jaisinghani continued, \u201cWhat has changed is that we now have highly effective pharmacologic tools that can lead to significant weight reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n The shift from body acceptance to all bodies representing sample size aligns conveniently with the rise of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, known as GLP-1s. These drugs, sold under brand names like Ozempic and Mounjaro, suppress appetite<\/a> and manage blood sugar by mimicking a hormone the body naturally produces.<\/p>\n The Risks of Taking Serious Medicine (Without Taking Them Seriously)<\/p>\n \u201cIncretin therapies are indicated for living with overweight and a weight-related comorbidity or obesity,\u201d Jaisinghani told The Looker. (Incretin treatments, which decrease blood glucose levels, include GLP-1 drugs.) Yet people who do not fit this candidate description are still getting the prescription.<\/p>\n \u201cUnfortunately, some patients using online telehealth forums may be able to obtain medications or compounded formulations without seeing a provider or comprehensive medical evaluation,\u201d she explained, calling the development \u201cconcerning.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cGLP-1s are powerful metabolic medications\u2014not cosmetic supplements,\u201d Jaisinghani said. \u201cWhen used outside clinical guidance, we lose the ability to appropriately screen for contraindications and monitor safety.\u201d<\/p>\n What Happens When a Thin Person Goes on a GLP-1<\/p>\n The use of the drug solely for cosmetic purposes can have significant consequences.<\/p>\n \u201cIn an underweight individual, this can potentially further weight reduction, nutritional deficiencies, and even sequelae of living with underweight and malnutrition,\u201d Jaisinghani warned.<\/p>\n These risks can include hormonal disruption, such as menstrual irregularities, decreased bone density, and loss of muscle mass.<\/p>\n Gallagher said that this can also have social implications, as individuals who have a history of an eating disorder or body dysmorphia \u201cmight feel good about something that actually is not good for them.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFor some people that I\u2019ve worked with, they have felt like wanting to be less social, because they don\u2019t like necessarily eating in groups as much anymore, or they can\u2019t eat as much anymore,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cSo going out to dinner might not be as fun or exciting, or might actually cause some stressors.\u201d<\/p>\n Online, people talk about \u201cmicrodosing\u201d the drug\u2014taking it in smaller doses or less regularly\u2014and position it as a safer option for individuals who do not have a medical need for weight loss. But this self-guided form of administering medication is not advisable.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Microdosing\u2019 does not equal \u2018safe\u2019 or \u2018risk-free,\u2019\u201d Jaisinghani said. \u201cIf someone is considering microdosing, they should always speak to a physician first about their goals and what\u2019s the best and safest way to achieve them.\u201c<\/p>\n Gallagher reminded patients to connect with mental health professionals when they are struggling with difficulties related to weight, body image, or disordered eating.<\/p>\n Medical experts do not recommend going on GLP-1 medication to patients who are underweight.<\/p>\n Alones Creative\/Getty Images<\/p>\n \u201cTaking this medication might bring up a lot for you,\u201d she said. \u201cAny people, especially women, have a challenging relationship with body image, shape, and weight, relationship to food, relationship to self-confidence. And these are all very layered and complex.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re looking at celebrities and you\u2019re feeling maybe triggered by seeing celebrities look really thin,\u201d she suggested, \u201cI think that\u2019s also important to explore your values\u2014what\u2019s important to you and the relationship that you want to have with your body, and shape, and weight, and food.\u201d<\/p>\n![\"Layla](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/QQH7WISUOVF55E3E6FZULBTFAA.jpg\")
