They\u2019ve found themselves newly minted celebrities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tmo8s000l3b6qfuc4m20p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen we came home, we were shocked at the global outpouring of support, of pride, of ownership of this mission,\u201d Wiseman said Thursday. \u201cThat\u2019s what the four of us wanted. We wanted to go out and try to do something that would bring the world together.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1rqqib00043b6qpug89s5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 10-day mission marked the first time astronauts have traveled to the moon since the final Apollo flight in 1972. The crew also ventured deeper into space than any human before, surpassing the Apollo 13 record set in 1970.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1w2n3f000o3b6qfjwnrpjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koch added that it was difficult to describe \u201chow much it meant to us to hear that the mission had an impact.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1w4y7m000q3b6qa082pob9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI cannot overstate how important that was to us,\u201d Koch said of inspiring the public. \u201cIt was every bit as important as accomplishing the technical goals and being there for our NASA teammates was to make this the world\u2019s mission.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1ub94n00003b6qr3o54lg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last week, the crew returned to Earth, enduring the jarring moment of reentry \u2014 the point at which the astronauts hit Earth\u2019s thick inner atmosphere while their capsule was still traveling more than 30 times the speed of sound.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1uc7y100023b6qypx9mgr0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Glover described it as a visceral experience, having been stunned by the sound of parachutes deploying after the Orion capsule plummeted through the air and experienced a six-minute communications blackout due to plasma created by the sheer speed at which their vehicle was moving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1ucxk700043b6q3k25dx44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you dove off \u2026 a skyscraper backwards, that\u2019s what it felt like for five seconds,\u201d Glover said, referring to the moment the capsule went into free fall after a set of parachutes broke away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wcb1h00173b6qhwcfic9h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During reentry, as the spacecraft first encounters air molecules, a violent wave of compression can conjure temperatures of up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Protecting the crew during this phase of reentry is the heat shield, a layer at the bottom of the Orion capsule that is designed to char and erode in order to dissipate the heat and keep the capsule\u2019s interior at a comfortable temperature.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1weup500193b6qs6wbznl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On this mission, NASA flew the Orion capsule with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/23\/science\/artemis-2-orion-capsule-heat-shield\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suboptimal heat shield<\/a>. During the news conference, the astronauts said they believe they saw a moment of \u201cchar loss\u201d \u2014 an instance in which the heat shield may have had portions become dislodged. Such char loss was seen during the Artemis I uncrewed test flight in 2022, and NASA hoped to mitigate the issue by flying Artemis II with a modified reentry trajectory. But the agency did not replace or change the heat shield between missions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wj34o001b3b6qjqoaewox@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe came in faster. We came in hot,\u201d Wiseman said of the altered reentry path.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wjtbl001d3b6qx2drjr62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the char loss, Wiseman said, \u201clooking out the window that whole way in, it was a smooth ride.\u201d He added that the astronauts are awaiting NASA\u2019s full analysis of how the heat shield performed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1uxtwo00083b6q58ygm6fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The crew was also candid about the unusual feelings conjured by watching your home planet disappear as you venture so far into space.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/nhq202604110026-large.jpg\" alt=\"Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch hugs the Orion spacecraft in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha on April 11, one day after the crew splashed down off the coast of California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1318\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1uzmh3000a3b6qgqzb26j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you look down at your display, and you see 212,000 miles, and the miles are increasing\u2026 your awareness is heightened the whole time,\u201d said Wiseman.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1v0mo2000c3b6q24gsi85r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI was looking at myself \u2014 reflecting as well every day \u2014 and I was just looking for signs of agitation, or signs of stress, or signs of anxiety or tension,\u201d he said. \u201cOne day, we were in the med kit, and we found some medication\u201d for stress and anxiety.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1vs1hw000m3b6q6giopunl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were like, well, I just can\u2019t even imagine taking that,\u201d Wiseman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1v1bl0000e3b6q112ky2gu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But mental health challenges were an indelible part of the experience, Glover noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1v1p76000g3b6qnwousqrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is so important,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a team of operational psychologists and psychiatrists that help us skill up to be ready to accomplish things like this, and so we did not just do that on our own.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1rqqib00053b6q7xo8re5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Glover, Koch, Hansen and Wiseman captured striking images of the moon during their seven-hour flyby of the lunar surface, which occurred on the sixth day of their mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1rqqib00063b6qvo7p50ke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Already taking pop culture by storm, their journey and unprecedented glimpse of the moon\u2019s far side was as captivating to the public as it was valuable for science, according to NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/art002e009571-orig.jpg\" alt=\"The moon, backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse, is photographed by NASA\u2019s Orion spacecraft on April 6, during the Artemis II mission.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1875\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1rqqib00073b6qe5wa9ap4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After years of training together and more than a week spent in space, the astronauts describe their relationship as more than crewmates. They are brothers and sisters, they have said, forever bonded by the trials and triumphs of their adventure \u2014 which included living in tight quarters aboard their 16.5-foot-wide Orion spacecraft, grappling with a broken toilet, and experiencing what it\u2019s like to glance back at Earth from the lonely confines of a spacecraft devoid of radio communications more than a quarter million miles away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1thh1d000j3b6qdas8mhzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s the closest four humans can be and not be a family,\u201d Wiseman said Thursday during opening remarks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wanh900133b6qouf7lon7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koch joked that when the quartet were back on Earth, tucking into beds aboard the Naval recovery ship the night they returned, the crew felt uncomfortably distant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wblff00153b6qeskux3zv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were about eight feet apart in the beds,\u201d Koch said, \u201cand it felt way too far.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wmeji001h3b6q3do4roew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The astronauts said they have been busy since their return and need more time to fully appreciate the impact of their mission on themselves and the world. But they each said they were energized and prepared to continue taking bold steps forward in humans spaceflight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wncuj001j3b6qolw0or6i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wiseman said that, if the Artemis II crew had taken a lunar lander along on the mission, \u201cat least three\u201d of the crewmembers would have been scrambling to use it to get down to the lunar surface. (Their 10-day trip involved a flyby of the moon, but the team did not have a vehicle capable of touching down on the surface.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wp21r001l3b6qeqk9jl47@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hansen also reflected on NASA\u2019s future endeavors, noting that if the space agency and its international partners aim to build a base on the moon, allowing astronauts to live and work there permanently, astronauts need to be comfortable with danger.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1wqni0001n3b6q1mljhkle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have to be willing to accept a little more risk than we were willing to accept in the past,\u201d Hansen said.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmo1uj4ks00003b6qn4o912hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
