{"id":588520,"date":"2026-04-16T21:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T21:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/588520\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T21:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T21:56:12","slug":"belgian-convention-centre-wins-mies-van-der-rohe-award-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/588520\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgian convention centre wins Mies van der Rohe Award 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 1950s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/conference-centres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convention centre<\/a> revitalised by architecture studios AgwA and Architecten Jan de Vylder Inge Vinck has been awarded this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mies-van-der-rohe-award\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mies van de Rohe Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year transformation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agwa.be\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AgwA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/architectenjdviv.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Architecten Jan de Vylder Inge Vinck<\/a> prioritised the conservation of the 50,000-square-metre Charleroi Palais des Expositions, which was originally completed in 1954.<\/p>\n<p>It was selected as the 2026 winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award&#8217;s architecture category in recognition of its &#8220;bold yet resourceful approach&#8221;, the jury said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317112 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mies-van-de-rohe-awards-2026-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_2.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of the Charleroi Palais des Expositions\" width=\"2364\" height=\"3472\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Charleroi Palais des Expositions revamp has won the Mies van der Rohe Award<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is awarded for its intelligent and precise transformation of an immense existing exhibition building, demonstrating how architecture can work with what is already there to unlock new spatial, social, and material possibilities,&#8221; said the panel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than replacing, it reactivates the place embracing constraints, engaging with the building&#8217;s inherent qualities, and developing a bold yet resourceful approach that turns scarcity into opportunity and repair into a powerful design strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Mies van der Rohe Award is bestowed biennially by the European Commission and the Fundacio\u0301 Mies van der Rohe. Charleroi Palais des Expositions was selected as the 2026 winner from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/02\/05\/mies-van-der-rohe-award-finalists-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five finalists<\/a> in the architecture category.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317111 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mies-van-de-rohe-awards-2026-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_1.jpg\" alt=\"Charleroi Palais des Expositions\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1610\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>AgwA and Architecten Jan de Vylder Inge Vinck prioritised conservation<\/p>\n<p>Interventions by the studios included removing facades in the central hall to create a covered outdoor spaces and converting its south wing into a multi-storey car park.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the main architecture award, this year&#8217;s emerging architecture prize winner has also been announced.
