Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that he and his wife, Rama Duwaji<\/a>, will be skipping the Met Gala<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n In an interview with Hell Gate<\/a>, Mamdani was asked about a recent \u201cPage Six<\/a>\u201d report that he and Duwaji weren\u2019t planning to go, responding, \u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d When the reporter pressed him on why he would give up such a sweet perk of the mayor gig \u2014 unlike his predecessors, who\u2019ve shown up in varying degrees of cringe formalwear<\/a> \u2014 Mamdani managed an impressively diplomatic answer. \u201cI love the Met. I think that it\u2019s an incredible museum,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cI recently saw The Thomas Crown Affair.\u201d<\/p>\n The Thomas Crown Affair<\/a>, by the way, is about a billionaire who steals a painting from the Met and falls in love with the insurance investigator, so do with that what you will. Mamdani added that the Met is a \u201ccritical part of the city,\u201d but he is focused on making New York affordable.<\/p>\n Perhaps the mayor simply felt that as a Democratic Socialist who\u2019s made wealth inequality a key pillar of his campaign, it would be unwise to appear at an event famed for its ostentatious displays of wealth<\/a> (particularly on a year where the Bezoses<\/a> seem to be playing such a major role).
