RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks investigating unlawful removal of mountain goat head in Spearfish Canyon<\/p>\n
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) is asking for the public\u2019s help after someone unlawfully removed the head of a dead mountain goat in Spearfish Canyon earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Officials say the animal\u2019s carcass was found at the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls on the morning of April 8. However, by the time a GFP biologist arrived, the head had already been taken.<\/p>\n
Authorities noted the goat was not poached but removing or possessing any part of the animal without permission is still illegal.<\/p>\n
Under state law (SDCL 41-14-32), taking or possessing wildlife \u2014 or any part of it \u2014 without authorization is prohibited. Because mountain goats are classified as big game in South Dakota, violations can result in a Class 1 misdemeanor.<\/p>\n
