A bad week for LIV Golf and Bryson DeChambeau continues to get worse.<\/p>\n

The league’s tournament at Mexico City was supposed to be its main focus post-Masters \u2014 but when rumors began spreading this week that LIV’s future was in question due to potential funding cuts, it’s taken away the focus from a lot of the action.<\/p>\n

Still, the Mexico City tournament has gone on as scheduled, even with some technical difficulties on Thursday<\/a>. Only adding insult to injury for LIV, however, was DeChambeau, who missed the cut at the Masters, chiming in with negative opinions of the greens in Mexico City, with the star heard complaining about “destroyed grass.”<\/p>\n

Bryson DeChambeau rips LIV Golf conditions in Mexico City<\/p>\n

DeChambeau was not shy with his thoughts about the greens at LIV Golf’s Mexico City event on Friday. After hitting a bunker shot into the rough, with fans looking on just a few feet away from him, DeChambeau spoke about the patches of dirt he was standing in.<\/p>\n

“You’ve got destroyed grass. Oh, this is rough?” DeChambeau said. “Guys, this is what we’re playing on, apparently.”<\/p>\n

He was then seen calling an official over and discussing the conditions, asking about the rough, “What’s it called again?”<\/p>\n

“You’ve got to have a rule here,” DeChambeau said. “It’s unbelievable.”<\/p>\n

He proceeded to take his shot from the rough, lining up a putt on the next stroke.<\/p>\n

Is LIV Golf shutting down?<\/p>\n

For now, there don’t appear to be any immediate plans for LIV Golf to shut down. But over the past few days, rumors and reports have indicated the league’s future is very much up in the air.<\/p>\n

Much of the speculation began with a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from the X account “The Monday Q Info,” run by\u00a0 golf insider Ryan French, which said that “a bombshell announcement on LIVs future is imminent,” citing unnamed sources. French also then went on\u00a0an X live stream\u00a0on April 14 to elaborate on his post,\u00a0per Golf Channel,<\/a>\u00a0saying he believed LIV Golf would be “shutting down,” and that he had also been told some LIV players and employees were not paid on time.<\/p>\n

“I think everybody should probably stay near their phones\u2026 It’s happening. It’s definitely happening,”\u00a0French said, per Golf Channel.<\/p>\n

Following that report, more information began to suggest the end of LIV Golf was coming.\u00a0The Telegraph reported<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0LIV officials had been called to New York, with the league’s media center being closed for the first time ever and “not a single executive present” at the Club de Golf Chapultepec, the Mexico City venue where the current tournament is being held.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0also reported that Saudi Arabia is considering withdrawing its funding from the tour, which would “jeopardize the future of a multi-billion dollar project.”<\/p>\n

However, play has continued at Mexico City this week, and LIV\u00a0CEO Scott O\u2019Neil recently said that the league, at least, is funded through the end of the current season. In an email to staff, per ESPN,<\/a> O’Neil said the season would\u00a0continue “as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just not the way the world works,\u201d O\u2019Neil said about future funding,\u00a0per Golf Digest<\/a>. \u201cWe have commitments to have this \u2026 the reality is you’re funded through the season and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going. But that\u2019s not different from any other private equity-funded business in the history of mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n
