On April 16, Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled after five seasons, PEOPLE confirmed<\/p>\n

Star Christopher Meloni posted an emotional video reacting to the news, and his longtime costar and friend Mariska Hargitay showed her support in the comments<\/p>\n

Law & Order: Organized Crime premiered in 2021 and saw the return of Meloni’s Elliott Stabler, whom he originated on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999<\/p>\n

On Thursday, April 16, PEOPLE confirmed that Law & Order: Organized Crime would not return after season 5<\/a>, and Meloni, 65, addressed the news in an Instagram video<\/a> posted that same day.<\/p>\n

He appeared to hold back tears in the video as he expressed his gratitude to fans<\/a> for their decades of love, and Hargitay, his longtime costar and friend, showed her support in the comments section. “P4L \u2764\ufe0f,” she wrote, presumably meaning “Partners for life.”<\/p>\n

In the video, Meloni thanked fans, who he said, “helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity” and for “sticking with him and welcoming him back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organized Crime<\/a>‘s premiere in 2021 marked the return of the character he’d originated on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit<\/a> in 1999 alongside Hargitay as Olivia Benson. Meloni exited SVU in 2012, but has often reprised his beloved character alongside Hargitay, 62.<\/p>\n

His eyes welled up in the video as he said he had a “good ride” playing the character for so long. “You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of. Nearly 17 odd years.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Law & Order: Organized Crime, Meloni starred as Elliot Stabler for 75 episodes alongside Ainsley Seiger, Danielle Mon\u00e9 Truitt and Rick Gonzalez.<\/p>\n

The series saw Stabler return to New York “after a decade abroad to rebuild his life following a devastating personal loss,” per the synopsis, as he worked with Sgt. Ayanna Bell\u2019s (Truitt) in the Organized Crime Control Bureau.<\/p>\n

News of Organized Crime’s cancellation came hours before Law & Order: SVU was renewed for a record-breaking 28th season.<\/p>\n

Hargitay continues to lead the series, alongside Ice-T<\/a> and Peter Scanavino<\/a>, Kevin Kane and Aim\u00e9 Donna Kelly. Season 27 also saw the return of Kelli Giddish as a series regular<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.<\/p>\n
