These jets, capable of ejecting material at nearly the speed of light, have long been considered one of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. Yet, until now, the precise measurement of their power was elusive. The new findings from the Cygnus X-1 system, a binary star-black hole system, reveal that these jets carry away a significant portion of the energy sucked into the black hole, transforming our understanding of black hole physics and their impact on the surrounding universe.

A Cosmic Dance of Destruction

Cygnus X-1 is not just any black hole, it is the first black hole ever discovered, orbiting a massive companion star that is 40 times the mass of our Sun. In this cosmic waltz, the black hole feeds on material from its stellar neighbor, drawing in gas and particles at a staggering rate. As this material spirals toward the black hole, powerful magnetic fields accelerate it into fast-moving jets, which shoot outwards at nearly the speed of light.

But what happens next is what makes this system truly unique. The companion star’s intense stellar wind, a stream of charged particles ejected from the star’s surface, pushes against these jets, causing them to bend and change direction. This interaction, while seemingly subtle, dramatically alters the behavior of the jets over time, adding a layer of complexity to their dynamics.

High-resolution imaging of the jets in Cygnus X-1 over a full binary orbit in 2016.
a–i, Individual VLBI images (with the six 8.4-GHz VLBA observations in blue and the three 5-GHz EVN observations in purple), rotated anticlockwise by 25°, and with an asymmetric axis ratio to help visualize the jet bending. However, thanks to advances in high-resolution imaging, researchers were able to capture the jets’ movements in unprecedented detail. The team combined data from several radio telescopes, effectively creating an image with the precision of one massive telescope spread across thousands of kilometers.

“A key finding from this research is that about 10% of the energy released as matter falls in towards the black hole is carried away by the jets,” said Dr. Steve Prabu, a key researcher in the study published in Nature Astronomy. This revelation is crucial because it validates long-standing assumptions in the field. “This is what scientists usually assume in large-scale simulated models of the universe, but it has been hard to confirm by observation until now.”

The discovery doesn’t just enhance our understanding of Cygnus X-1, it sets a powerful benchmark for all black holes. With this new data, scientists now have an anchor for understanding the behavior of black hole jets, no matter the black hole’s size.

model-independent demonstration of bent jets in Cygnus X-1.
a,b, VLBA images of Cygnus X-1 close to superior conjunction (a) and inferior conjunction (b), when the jets showed significant deviations from the median position angle. These next-generation radio telescopes will allow scientists to study black hole jets across millions of galaxies. With the new measurement as a reference, scientists will be able to calibrate their observations and gain an even deeper understanding of how black holes interact with their environments.

The Importance of Jet Power in Galactic Evolution

Black hole jets don’t just affect the black hole itself; they have a significant impact on their entire environment. These jets release vast amounts of energy into the surrounding interstellar medium, influencing the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies.

“Black hole jets provide an important source of feedback to the surrounding environment and are critical to understanding the evolution of galaxies,” explained Prabu. By measuring the power of these jets, scientists gain invaluable insight into the processes that govern not just the black holes, but the galaxies themselves.

Understanding how these jets shape galaxies helps astronomers piece together the larger picture of cosmic evolution. It is now clear that black holes play an active role in determining the fate of the galaxies in which they reside, not just as devouring monsters at their centers, but as dynamic forces that affect the life cycle of the entire galaxy.

Scientists have finally measured the astonishing power of jets launched by black holes.
