\nIt\u2019s Canada against the world in this rough UFC Fight Night card
\nthat may yet deliver in terms of action but is sorely lacking in
\nthe rankings-relevance department. Nevertheless, we persist, as
\nthere are 43 fight cards to punch through this year and a fight fan
\ndoes not dine on caviar alone. The ground turkey of a fight card
\nprovides 12 matches, with nine of those featuring a Canadian
\nathlete against a foreign adversary. The first fight of the night
\nis one of those bouts when newcomers collide, as Siraj (14-3, 0-0
\nUFC) reps his home country against Texas-based Yannis (9-4, 0-1
\nUFC) at 135 pounds. Drawing the first assignment of the evening is
\nreferee Chris Desautels. The combatants touch \u2018em up to seal the
\ncage around them, and it\u2019s time for some action.<\/p>\n

Yannis, keeping his hands relatively low, positions himself early
\nin the center of the cage. Siraj switches stances back and forth to
\nintroduce early difficulties to his foe, with the Canadian primed
\nand ready to fire off heavy counters. He steps in, lands a low kick
\nand hops back to evade one coming back at him. They pump-fake at
\none another until Siraj spurs into action with a right hand and a
\npair of front kicks. Yannis sits on a left hand to get Siraj\u2019s
\nattention, but he is similarly caught in an exchange. Yannis drills
\nhis opponent with a three-punch combo square on the jaw, knocking
\nSiraj down to the mat. Rather than playing around in the guard,
\nYannis stands back up and allows Siraj to follow him, clipping him
\nwith another right on the way up. Siraj appears to have shaken the
\ncobwebs out quickly, but he ducks down for a level change and has
\nhis bell rung again. Yannis staggers and erects himself upright
\nagain, but it is taking the right hand flush again and again.<\/p>\n


\nYannis opens up with a knee and another power right hook, shaking
\nthe Canadian up. Siraj collapses to his back in a bad way, and
\nYannis mounts his adversary and punishes him with ferocious elbows.
\nSiraj might have been knocked out from the bombardment of elbows,
\nand as he sits up, his eyes looking every direction but his
\nopponent\u2019s, Desautels waves the fight off as he must have seen
\nsomething he did not like.<\/a> Yannis climbs off his
\nfallen foe to celebrate, while the defeated Canadian breaks down in
\ntears. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in one
\nscene.<\/p>\n

\nWhile initially booked as a bantamweight fight, someone in the
\nCastaneda (21-8, 4-4 UFC) vs. Vologdin (12-4-1, 0-0 UFC) matchup
\nappeared to be struggling to get down to 136 pounds and requested
\nit be set for 139 pounds. The catchweight contest will have
\ngold-standard referee Jason Herzog watching over the fighters, and
\nthey are glad to still be competing and show it with a shared clap
\nof hands.<\/p>\n

Castaneda says hello with his leg, firing off kicks high and low to
\nmake Vologdin nod at him in appreciation of his game. Castaneda
\neven goes for an axe kick when Vologdin crowds him, and Vologdin
\nsettles to kick his foe back a few times. Castaneda bounces out of
\nthe way when the shorter Russian lunges at him, and he watches
\nVologdin miss on a body shot to stick him with a left cross and two
\nlow kicks. Vologdin returns fire with a kick that appears to
\nfrustrate his opponent, resulting in a clinch as the fans
\nimmediately start booing. It\u2019s going to be one of those nights.
\n\u201cSexi Mexi\u201d breaks out of the tie-up and steps back to evade a
\nknee, and the two have their legs entangled when throwing them at
\nthe same time. Castaneda bounces back up, and he is gifted a
\nhigh-five when standing up. He lets fly a low kick to counter a jab
\nthat bangs square into the bottom of Vologdin\u2019s cup, who stumbles
\naround the cage in serious pain as Herzog calls time. Vologdin
\ndrops to his knees as he tries to shake out some of the discomfort,
\nand he steels himself and is good to go after about 50 seconds of
\nbreak. They both let fly kicks, and Castaneda follows one with a
\nsharp right hand on the temple.<\/p>\n

Vologdin has to blink out the impact of the blow and gets right
\nback into the melee, flashing his jab to find his range. When
\nVologdin commits to big hooks, Castaneda slips them, counters and
\nshoves his foe back. Vologdin bounces forward and has a low kick
\nchecked, and he stands in the pocket to trade but cannot pin \u201cSexi
\nMexi\u201d down, even with a spinning wheel kick try. The jabs of
\nVologdin have bloodied up Castaneda\u2019s nose, who pitches out a kick
\nand shoots in for a level change. There is no takedown to be found
\nfrom this, so Castaneda backs off and picks and pokes with body
\nkick and long punches. Vologdin tries to pay him back with crisp
\npocket boxing, but he finds that he is beaten to the punch and kick
\nby the speedster from Minnesota. Vologdin keeps marching forward to
\nforce Castaneda to fight off the back foot, but this plays at least
\npartially into the game plan of Castaneda, who is potshotting him
\nat range. Vologdin just misses with a rolling thunder kick, and the
\nhorn sounds.<\/p>\n

\nA fist bump opens the round, and Castaneda gets right going
\npeppering with kicks. Vologdin throws three back in rapid
\nsuccession to think about, but the volume is in favor of the
\nAmerican for now. Vologdin drives through a one-two, and Castaneda
\nstands firm and jabs him in the nose to back him off. Vologdin
\nloops two right hand that bang into the guard, but his left to the
\nribs does score. Castenada goes low to the body, and he sticks
\naround and gets popped by three punches from the debuting fighter.
\nCastaneda bounces in and out behind his jab, just dodging the worst
\nflying his way in time but still eating some shots when engaging.
\nVologdin jabs and shoots in for a single-leg takedown, and
\nCastaneda bounces off his knee and hops back to the cage wall to
\nset up a guillotine choke. Vologdin elevates and dumps him,
\nbreaking out of the choke, but he does not have Castaneda down.<\/p>\n

Castaneda is able to break out of the attempt and release his own
\nsubmission grip to reset, where he stands in front of Vologdin and
\nstrings together quick combos. Vologdin winds up with a power left
\nhand, and Castaneda shoulder-rolls it to take the sting out of it
\nand gives back a heavy right up top. Castaneda leads off an
\nexchange with a low kick that bangs into the groin, and he follows
\nit with heavy punches as Vologdin turns away to recover from the
\nfoul. Herzog has to peel Castaneda away, as Castaneda claims he did
\nnot land the low strike, and Vologdin eats a few more before Herzog
\nis in place. Vologdin sits down to get his wind back, and Herzog
\ndeducts one point from Castaneda for his second groin kick. After
\n75 seconds, the round resumes, and thank goodness rules are being
\nenforced around here. They proceed to go right after one another,
\nwith Castaneda leading the dance with power and volume. Vologdin is
\ncomfortable to sit on his right hand and launch it when it feels
\nright, and he gets caught in a clinch and takes a spinning back
\nelbow on the noggin before separating. Castaneda slips and ducks
\nhis way in, constantly changing his target with weapons like a knee
\nup the middle, two left hands and a right to the ribs. Vologdin is
\nlargely headhunting, and Castaneda is giving him a lot to think
\nabout as the second round concludes.<\/p>\n

\nThey are off to the races in the final round, sharing a fist bump
\nbefore throwing hands and feet en masse. Castaneda puts it on
\nVologdin, who fires back and opens a cut on the forehead. Castaneda
\nkeeps pouring it on the Russian, who is reeling from taking shots
\nbut still ready to swing for the bleachers. Castaneda stays just
\nout of boxing range from his opponent to measure his blows
\nappropriately, and he punches his way into a clinch and is boxed
\nout of it. Vologdin\u2019s nose starts to leak from the oncoming fire,
\nas Castaneda is turning on the jets while Vologdin appears to be
\nfading. The reactions from Vologdin taking damage are starting to
\nget more exaggerated, as he shoots in for a double-leg takedown
\nthat is easily sprawled. Castaneda lets his foe back up so he can
\nput hands on him, and he lets rip low kick and high punches as
\nVologdin is now leaking from a cut on the bridge of his nose.<\/p>\n

Castaneda lets rip a big flurry of punches, knocking Vologdin back
\nand knocking him down. Vologdin muscles his way back upright, and
\nCastaneda starts working the body to shut him down. Vologdin grits
\nhis teeth and throws everything he has back, but Castaneda sees it
\ncoming and tees off on him. Castaneda goes after a big right hand
\nand a left high kick, and he slips back when Vologdin tries another
\nrolling thunder kick. Vologdin holds his hand up awkwardly as if he
\nwere asking a question in class\u2014he does have the youthful type of
\nface where he looks like he was plucked from study hall\u2014and
\nCastaneda backs off. Castaneda motions to the center of the Octagon
\nto initiate a brawl, and unlike many others who have offered this
\nand bailed on it, they proceed to bust one another up. Castaneda
\ngets the better of the exchanges but only by a small margin, and he
\nstings Vologdin and gets taken down. The fun slugfest ends with
\nVologdin on top, and it may all come down to the scoring of the
\nfirst round.<\/p>\n

\nHer sights set on a few women\u2019s flyweight records including most
\nappearances, Aldrich (14-7, 10-6 UFC) officially enters into her
\n13th match at the weight class\u2014trailing co-leads Valentina
\nShevchenko, Katlyn Cerminara and Andrea Lee all by one apiece. She
\nwill be coming to blows with Canada\u2019s own Horth (9-2, 4-2 UFC) as
\nthe prelims press on, where they will be joined by referee Herb
\nDean in the cage. There is no glove touch to start things off, as
\nthey want to get right after it.<\/p>\n

Horth presses the action early, boxing her way into range. Aldrich
\ncounters with a quick left hand and resets to plant a one-two on
\nthe chin. After a lull while they try to find one another\u2019s range,
\nAldrich breaks it with a couple more one-twos as Horth\u2019s nose
\nstarts shining red. Aldrich sits down on a low kick and catches an
\nadvancing Horth with a right hand. The Canadian parries a combo of
\npunches and uses her own leg to block one flying at her from
\nAldrich. Horth scores a high body kick and leans back to watch a
\none-two buzz past her. Aldrich doubles up on her jab and catches a
\nbody kick, and she spins with a wheel kick. Horth pushes through it
\nand dings her up with a few blows before backing off.<\/p>\n

Aldrich pecks out with her jab, staying to her preferred range
\nwhile even Horth\u2019s low kicks largely come up short. Aldrich shoots
\nin during a quiet moment in pursuit of a single, backing the
\nCanadian up to the wall but not grounding her outright. Aldrich
\nstays tight to Horth, working a knee or two on the inside but
\nlargely holding pat. Horth twists and shakes out of it, and she has
\na high kick harmlessly bounce off the raised guard. Aldrich lunges
\nwith a one-two, and when she tries again, she is met with a body
\nkick. Horth clips Aldrich with two hooks in likely the heaviest
\nblows of the round, and she takes a low kick to fire off three more
\nto get Aldrich\u2019s attention. The sparring match of a round comes to
\na close.<\/p>\n

\nTo start out the round, Aldrich peeks around her guard with her
\njab. Horth swings much heavier when pressing forward, but most of
\nher early blows are either blocked or out of range. Aldrich backs
\nher up with a solid right hand on the schnoz, and she tries to
\nfollow it with a head kick only to bang it off the gloves. Horth
\npays her back with a straight right hand down the pipe, and her
\nlong kicks are still largely unable to get through. They take turns
\nengaging with one another, with Aldrich turning her hips into a low
\nkick and dancing away from the anticipated counters. Aldrich steps
\nin with an elbow that is inches off the mark, and she hops back
\nfrom a head kick as well. Aldrich shadowboxes for a while, not
\nlanding anything of merit. Horth\u2019s responses are almost all kicks,
\nand they almost all miss completely.<\/p>\n

Aldrich stands in the pocket to fire off a left hand, and she gets
\nit through and lances out a right hand to preemptively counter a
\nbody kick. Aldrich goes after a one-two to force Horth to adjust or
\ncheck her nose that is not leaking at this point. Aldrich leaves a
\nbody kick out too long, resulting in Horth catching her cleanly
\nwith her firsts upstairs. Aldrich drives her back with a right
\nhand, and she steps through to put two more on the chin. Aldrich\u2019s
\njab allows her to stay largely defensively sound, protecting her
\nfrom head kicks but not when Horth gets in close. They crash
\ntogether and trade strikes briefly, and they back off to get back
\nto inaccurate, low-power kickboxing. Aldrich swarms forward with
\ntwo punches, and then bails on her advancing effort when a knee is
\nput up in her way. Horth threatens with a step-in knee, and the
\nhorn sounds to end the slow round.<\/p>\n

\nThe women rush at one another, and then resume their strategy of
\ntit-for-tat strikes. Aldrich catches her foe at the end of a right
\nhand, but it is one and done as Horth prods out with her foot.
\nAldrich breaks some silence with a one-two, and Horth drives her
\nback with a body kick. Aldrich jabs through the guard and tries to
\nfollow with two sweeping left hooks. This brings Horth into the
\nfight again, as the Canadian throws fire in her fists but peels
\nback before fully committing. Head kicks from both lady appear feet
\naway from their intended targets, and Aldrich tries to surprise her
\nfoe with a leaping right hook. Aldrich ducks a jab to shoot for a
\ntakedown, and the Canadian tosses her to the side with ease. Horth
\noffers out a low kick and is jabbed back.<\/p>\n

Blows from both sides largely bound off their respective raised
\nguards, including a spinning back fist from the American. Accuracy
\nrates for these two are likely quite low, as are the significant
\nstrike tallies. Horth slowly meanders forward behind her long foot,
\nand she is knocked back several steps by Aldrich\u2019s left hands.
\nAldrich kicks out the front leg and sways back as Horth tries to
\nboot her in the face, still moving when Horth\u2019s hands soar past her
\nas well. Aldrich bounces her shin off the shoulder of her opponent,
\nsticking her with a jab but nothing else. Aldrich catches a kick
\nand fires back, but she too does not extend fully as if she was
\nwaiting for something or concerned to let go. Horth spams kicks
\nfrom way out of the way, and she drills Aldrich with long punches
\nas the two decide to start fighting with seconds left. They duke it
\nout in a surprisingly powerful back-and-forth that only concludes
\nwhen time expires, and they hug it out after 15 minutes of mostly
\nsparring.<\/p>\n

\nWith a 100% finish rate still in her pocket, Alberta native Croden
\n(7-3, 1-1 UFC)\u2014quick note to all those who watched the Shillan &
\nDuffy preview show for this one and thought this fight card was
\ngoing down in the province of Alberta: tonight\u2019s action is in
\nsouthern Manitoba, just north of the shared border of North Dakota
\nand Minnesota, two provinces to the right of Alberta. Croden will
\nstill be the favored athlete in the building of the two, as she
\nfaces off Russian striker Zheleznyakova (10-2, 2-1 UFC). The two
\nbantamweights come to blows with referee Jerin Valel calling the
\nshots, and they touch \u2018em up before engaging.<\/p>\n

It is all about the jab in the early going for the two
\nbantamweights, with the two standing relatively the same size and
\npresenting a similar fist-first style. Jabs lead to follow-ups,
\nwhich leads to an unexpected trading of leather in the first 30
\nseconds. Croden thinks twice about throwing caution to the wind to
\njust brawl and resets to work her way forward at her own pace.
\nZheleznyakova chops at her foe\u2019s leg with a hefty kick and circles
\naway from the power from the Canadian, dodging a head kick and
\nstepping in to strike. Croden drives her away with a quick one-two,
\nand Zheleznyakova still manages to get in her face with a single
\nfist. They crash together and end up clinched, trading knees until
\nthey decide against doing this any further. It is not a mirror
\nmatch, but it is fairly close to that. One after the other, they
\nslug one another in the chops. Croden throws a hard right hand,
\ntakes one right back, and is amped up and tries to force \u201cIron
\nLady\u201d into a brawl. Zheleznyakova does not oblige her, instead
\nstrafing to either side.<\/p>\n

Zheleznyakova kicks low to swing high, and she moves all the way
\naround the cage to time her way in with a short flurry.
\nZheleznyakova gets a front kick through the guard, and when she
\nengages further, Croden ties her up to grapple. Croden bullies the
\nRussian to the fencing, looking perhaps for a body lock.
\nZheleznyakova keeps circling away to her right, away from Croden\u2019s
\npower, and this includes breaking out of a clinch. Zheleznyakova
\nchecks a kick to sling a one-two, and she lets a head kick fly past
\nher harmlessly. Zheleznyakova steps forward to bloody Croden\u2019s nose
\nwith a one-two, and her movement is flustering the Canadian.
\nZheleznyakova tries to engage again in a quick blitz, and Croden
\nstonewalls her and shoves her back. The deliberately paced round
\nends.<\/p>\n

\nZheleznyakova races out of her corner to engage as the second round
\nkicks off, and she does so right into the fists of her waiting
\nadversary. Croden welcomes this so she can score effectively,
\nforcing Zheleznyakova to retreat very soon after she starts
\ntrading. Croden whiffs on four fast punches because Zheleznyakova
\nis already out of range, and she is stuck chasing while blood leaks
\nfrom her nose. Zheleznyakova keeps moving, racking up plenty of
\nsteps while avoiding the worst of what flies her way time and
\nagain. Croden walks into the occasional jab from the Russian, who
\nis largely playing an avoidance-first game that may not be the most
\naesthetically pleasing from a \u201cjust bleed\u201d perspective. Nearly a
\nminute goes by without a significant strike landing, and then they
\ncrash together and drill one another in the face with a heavy
\npunch. Zheleznyakova tries to put three after it, and Croden has no
\nanswers while her face is starting to transform because of the
\nimpact of the shots she is absorbing.<\/p>\n

Croden runs after the Russian, chasing her around the cage to try
\nto punch her. She does not let Zheleznyakova off the hook, busting
\nher nose open in the midst of her punch salvos. Zheleznyakova turns
\ntail and runs away, forcing Croden to eventually slow Zheleznyakova
\ndown by tying her up. Croden looks for a body lock and a trip
\ntakedown, but Zheleznyakova is able to stay on her feet.
\nZheleznyakova breaks free, and she beans the Canadian with a right
\nhand flush on the temple. Both beaks are leaking, and Croden pays
\nit no mind as she rushes forward to attack. Croden nails her foe
\nwith two elbows, and Zheleznyakova tries to run away but is
\ntrapped. The Russian grabs the fence to prevent a takedown, with
\nValel screaming at her to knock that off. On her second effort,
\nCroden throws her down and knees her in the face and thigh on the
\nway back up. Croden leans on her opponent, sneaking in elbows.
\nZheleznyakova pushes her back with her fists, so Croden slaps her
\nin the face with the instep of her foot as the round wraps.<\/p>\n

\nCroden greets her opponent with raised arms to hug her, and then
\nthe last round begins. Zheleznyakova pumps out a one-two that
\nshakes Croden up and instantly re-bloodies her nose again, and she
\nsits in the pocket to jack her in the jaw with a left before
\ncircling away. Zheleznyakova bounces her way forward behind her
\njab, slipping back to dodge every counter. Croden lumbers ahead
\nslinging a left hook, and she shells up to block a one-two but is
\nnailed with three more punches when she tries to clinch.
\nZheleznyakova breaks off and turns to run and reset on her own
\nterms, but Croden catches up with her and clinches her. Croden
\nstays tight until Zheleznyakova shoves her away and pins her down
\nwith a one-two. Zheleznyakova swipes out with subsequent hooks when
\nCroden follows her recklessly, but it is a trap for the Canadian.
\nCroden ducks down to surprise Zheleznyakova with a tackling
\ntakedown, and Zheleznyakova grabs the fence to improve her position
\nand stand back up while Croden\u2019s team bellows about the uncalled
\nfoul.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Croden starts to hook up a standing arm-triangle
\nchoke, and Zheleznyakova tugs with both hands on the fencing to
\ntake some of the leverage out of it. Croden topples over with the
\nchoke to put Zheleznyakova flat on her back, and she releases the
\nsub to start beating the Russian down with left hands and a
\nquestionable knee while Zheleznyakova was standing. Valel calls for
\na replay due to the strike, and Croden continues pressuring the
\nincreasingly bloodied Zheleznyakova in a vicious clinch exchange.
\nCroden frames off with elbows and occasionally slashes them out to
\ndamage her opponent, and Zheleznyakova breaks off. Croden runs
\ntowards her and tackles her to the floor, climbing directly in
\nmount so she can bash Zheleznyakova with elbows. Zheleznyakova sits
\nup to try to turn things around but only gives her back up. Croden
\nunloads with a final barrage of elbows and fists, but time runs out
\nbefore she can secure the stoppage she was seeking.<\/p>\n

\nAbout as Canadian as it gets, majestically mulleted Boser (22-10-1,
\n5-5 UFC) is back on the roster after beating up Vinicius Moreira
\nover in UAE Warriors last year. The Albertan\u2014remember what we said
\nabove involving Croden\u2014is aiming to reach a .500 record in the
\nOctagon when he stands across the cage from Bellator expat Saricam
\n(11-2, 0-0 UFC). The heavyweights 34 and 35, respectively, they
\ncome in as relative youngsters to a division that is begging for
\nhot commodities. Referee Herb Dean stands firm, ready to take care
\nof the big men no matter where the action leads them. Fists are
\nnearly bumped before they are traded, with the two offering at
\ndifferent times that did not line up.<\/p>\n

There is little from the two big men in the early seconds, and as
\nif he heard something that angered him, Boser springs into action
\nand busts Saricam in the face with a fast flurry. He tags Saricam
\nagain, and the Turkish athlete counters with a takedown shot. Boser
\nshoves his man back, who trips and falls to his seat. Saricam
\nbounces back up, and they proceed to pitch kicks at one another.
\nBoser swings for the bleachers, and Saricam dips and pops him with
\na short right hand. Saricam shoots for a double way out of range,
\nand Boser stops it but is backed to the fencing. Boser is warned
\nfor grabbing shorts while Saricam grabs the fence, offsetting
\npenalties should result in a repeat first down but nothing ends up
\nhappening. They separate, and Boser scores but is dinged with fast
\ncounters.<\/p>\n

Boser winds up and hurls two big right hands, backing off when a
\nspinning back kick is aimed at his torso. Saricam comes up short
\nwinging punches, but his calf kick impacts on Boser\u2019s lead leg
\ncoming in. Saricam kicks the same spot, and he blocks a head kick
\nwith his elbow. Saricam loops a right hand around the guard after
\ndoubling up on a jab, and Boser is quick to get his hands up to
\ndefend anything that comes after like a head kick. Saricam boots
\nhim in the face with another kick, and the Canadian does not
\nflinch. Boser cracks Saricam, and Saricam fires right back and
\nproceeds to bash the Canadian and knock him to the wall. Boser
\nbounces back and nails Saricam, but Saricam keeps on him and
\nstifles him. Boser turns him about before long, authoring knees to
\nthe thigh until he has to fight off a throw effort. Boser separates
\nwith seconds to spare, going for two elbows and a spinning back
\nfist as the round concludes.<\/p>\n

\nThe heavyweights try to find their range early, with Boser getting
\nit first as he slings four punches in rapid succession. Saricam
\nfires off a big right hand to keep Boser honest, allowing Boser to
\nkick him in the lead leg so he can launch two right back. Boser
\nzips a right hand down the middle, and Saricam answers him
\nimmediately and effectively. Boser kicks the front leg and looks to
\ninitiate his power jab, looping a right hand and getting pushed off
\nhis feet when they smash chests together. Boser scrambles to get
\nback to his feet with what was not a knockdown but was a
\ndisadvantageous position, and he is able to do so no worse for
\nwear. They tie up in the center of the cage, with Boser staying
\nbusy with short elbows on the forehead. The Canadian stomps on his
\nfoe\u2019s toes as he keeps things old school.<\/p>\n

Boser clings on the Turkish fighter to take some of the steam out
\nof his fists, and he frames off to catch Saricam with two punches
\nbefore letting go. Saricam slowly works his way forward, ready and
\nwilling to bounce back when Boser hurls things at him. Boser keeps
\ngoing forward with two more big punches, and he appears to hurt
\nSaricam up close with short, strong elbows. Saricam has to blink
\nout the attack and gather a head of steam to fire off three quick
\npunches that force Boser to reevaluate his strategy. Boser throws
\nso far, he nearly topples over, but he recovers and watches Saricam
\nalmost do the same. Saricam clips the Canadian behind the ear,
\nsucking wind and advancing to set something big up.
\n
\nSaricam counters a low kick to release a tremendous right hand that
\nsmashes square into the Canadian\u2019s jaw, sending the mulleted man
\ncrashing down to the canvas once and for all. To finish the job,
\nSaricam rains down punishment with his fists until Dean has seen
\nenough.<\/a> Boser may have been knocked out in the
\nexchange, as he cannot stand up on his own power after the
\nstoppage. Dean and medical staff tend to the Canadian, who is
\nushered to his stool where he sits to learn what just happened. It
\nis now official: Gokhan Saricam has as many wins (one) in the UFC
\nas legendary kickboxer Gokhan Saki. Let that sink in.<\/p>\n

\nAt the tender age of 34, Canada\u2019s Leblanc (10-2, 0-0 UFC) is
\ngetting a callup to the UFC. The newly signed middleweight will be
\ngreeted by Valentin (10-6, 1 NC; 0-3 UFC), who cannot seem to even
\nbuy a win in the Octagon thus far. Referee Chris Desautels will
\ntake care of the particulars, standing back as the two opt against
\ntouching gloves.<\/p>\n

Valentin leads off with a chopping low kick, and he watches as a
\nhead kick buzzes the tower. Valentin sinks in a body kick, and
\nLeblanc fires one back just as hard. Valentin beats down the front
\nleg with three hard leg kicks, and he rocks the Canadian with an
\noverhand right. Valentin bowls the local athlete over and climbs
\ninto full mount with ease, and he allows Leblanc to turn over so he
\ncan take his back and get his hooks in. Leblanc hand-fights to
\ndefend his neck, so Valentin smacks him with his right hand and a
\nnumber of questionable elbows to open a choke up. Valentin grips
\nhold of a face crank submission, crushing the newcomer\u2019s jaw
\nwithout even bothering to slide it under the chin.
\nAs Valentin squeezes, his forearm slowly works its way beneath the
\nchin after all, and it is now a windpipe-destroying,
\ncarotid-crushing rear-naked choke. Leblanc knows he has nothing
\nmore to offer today and quickly surrenders, with the choke so tight
\nthat he might have otherwise gone out before long.<\/a> It
\nis a much-needed win for Valentin, who earns his first victory with
\nthe promotion in his fourth attempt. It is also a hugely emotional
\nmoment for Valentin, who celebrates with tears in his eyes as he
\nembraces his team and vanquished opponent.<\/p>\n

\nstruggling New Yorker in Buzukja (12-5, 1-3 UFC) against
\nbrick-fisted Brazilian Barbosa (17-2, 0-0 UFC) getting his sea legs
\non the largest stage possible. Before the fists fly, the
\nfeatherweights are checked in by referee Herb Dean. There is a
\nquick fist bump that precedes the action.<\/p>\n

Buzukja moves directly to the center of the cage to apply light
\npressure, pawing out with a front kick and a jab. Buzukja smacks
\nthe front leg with a kick as he pushes forward, rifling off a
\none-two after it. Barbosa responds when taking a hard body kick
\nwith an overhand right. Buzukja no-sells it and jabs the head and
\nbody back. Buzukja chips at the front leg when it is available to
\nhim, doubling up on his jab to keep Barbosa on the back foot.

\nAs if Barbosa was just charging up the entire time without telling
\nus, he walks forward confidently. Buzukja slings two punches at
\nhim, and he slips them and unloads with a consciousness-destroying
\nleft hand. Buzukja is out before his head clatters lifelessly off
\nthe canvas<\/a>, and Barbosa walks off raising his arms in
\nthe air knowing his work here is done. Dean races in just in case
\nBuzukja needs to be protected, but Barbosa is not about to do any
\nunnecessary damage. Bukuja eventually comes to, and he has to be
\ntold what happened because his short-term memory and parts of his
\nthird-grade education have just been forcefully ejected from his
\nskull. With 15 career knockouts to his credit, \u201cTicoto\u201d has
\nauthored all 15 of them in the first round. He may only know one
\nspeed, but it is borderline ludicrous.<\/p>\n

\nOnce a hot commodity off of the sole Brazilian season of Dana
\nWhite\u2019s Contender Series, Moises (19-9, 8-7 UFC) has regressed to
\nthe mean and is one defeat away from falling to .500 in the
\npromotion. Young (10-3, 1-1 UFC) has gone one up and one down thus
\nfar, so he is looking to break out of that pattern and into greater
\nheights. They will battle it out under the auspices of referee
\nJason Herzog, who will be keeping tabs on the 155ers for as long as
\nthey keep fighting.<\/p>\n

There is no touch of gloves. Moises pressure immediately forward,
\nbacking Young to the fence and shooting in on his hips within 10
\nseconds. Young places his back against the wall to keep himself
\nafloat, and as Moises keeps clinging to his man, the crowd grows
\nquite restless. Moises ignores the boos and irritation from the
\naudience and keeps tight to him. Young flips Moises over him, and
\nMoises recovers quickly enough so both men stand up. Young tosses
\nout a high kick to keep Moises honest, and he ducks a looping punch
\nbut cannot evade a front kick aimed at his jaw. Young probes with a
\njab and low kick, and Moises catches him in transition with a left
\nhook. They jab at the same time, and Young just misses a looping
\npunch as Moises kicks the lead calf. Young stays behind his
\njab.<\/p>\n

Moises loads up on power, and Young sees it coming and also knows a
\ntakedown is soon to test him. Young stops the first effort, but the
\nBrazilian redoubles his attempt and succeeds in putting Young down.
\nYoung wall-walks to stand up, and he gives his back up in the
\nprocess. Moises hops onto his back and wraps his legs around the
\nwaist while flirting with a choke attempt. Moises wraps his forearm
\nacross the face and tries to squeeze it, but the American is able
\nto fight it off and kick off the fencing to drop to his knees.
\nMoises welcomes this as he is leaned against the cage, and he
\nsmacks Young in the face with an undercut sneakily beneath Young\u2019s
\narmpit. Young sells out all the way to turn about, and Moises does
\nnot entirely give up the position and has Young trapped in an
\nawkward side-turned position that contorts his spine but is not
\nabout to force him to tap. Young breaks out and finds himself in
\narmbar danger, and he stacks the Brazilian up and lands a few
\npunches to conclude the round.<\/p>\n

\nThere is a slight fist bump to kick off the round, and Young is
\nquick to follow that bump with kicks from both limbs. Moises jabs
\nto the body to open up a right hand, and Young does not fall for
\nthe latter. Young jabs the body with his heel, and he reaches out
\nwith a right hook. Moises chops at the front leg, and Young
\nstumbles forward but is still more than willing to trade. The
\nAmerican digs a shot to the body and goes after an uppercut, and
\nMoises is just out of range with the latter. Moises wraps a right
\nhand around the ear and shoots for a single, with Young defending
\nit and pushing off. Moises shoulder-rolls a heavy right hand but
\nthe jabs are continuing to score. Young jabs Moises up with a kick
\nto the stomach and follows with a punch before he has to sprawl the
\nincoming takedown. Moises bullies Young to the wire for a few
\nseconds, and Young knows he cannot get ground out again and breaks
\nout soon.<\/p>\n

He proceeds to jab and cross Moises with short combinations, and he
\njust misses with a step-in knee. Moises wants another takedown, but
\nYoung is not having it and shucks him away easily. Both men look to
\ndouble up their jab and come over the top with a right hand, but
\nneither is able to do so as the big rights are telegraphed. They
\npick at one another with low kicks and stay busy from up close, not
\noverswinging anything and just selecting their places carefully. It
\nis one after the other, Moises lands, Young fires back, Moises
\nkeeps on throwing and Young is ready for more. Moises shoots low
\nfor a takedown, and he gets pushed away and nearly booted in the
\nface when standing up. The Brazilian manages to tackle Young over,
\nand he comes up short with a hefty knee. Young puts his fists on
\nMoises up high and to the chest, rolling with a right hand to press
\never forward until the bell sounds.<\/p>\n

\nYoung offers a high-five, and Moises accepts it before the final
\nframe ensues. Young gets back right where he left off, slowly
\npressing the action and outboxing the slugging Moises. Moises is
\nloading up on sheer power, while Young is content to touch and
\nmove. Young pitches Moises to the side when Moises changes levels,
\nand he delivers a stern uppercut to the jaw and staggers the
\nBrazilian with a follow-up right. He also marks Moises\u2019 face up on
\nmultiple places, including both cheeks and the bridge of the nose.
\nYoung steps in with a sharp elbow, and he tosses Moises to the side
\nas Moises predictably shoots in on his hips. Young kicks Moises\u2019
\nlead leg out from him as Moises is shooting for a takedown, and
\nMoises flops to his back while Young raises in arms in the air.
\nMoises stands up thanks to Herzog, and he steps in with a thudding
\nelbow on the nose. Moises failed takedown is an even worse look
\nwhen he falls to his back again when he does not get it. Young
\nforces him to stand.<\/p>\n

Moises tries to brawl, but he is far too slow while Young picks him
\napart with fast combinations. Young clips Moises behind the ear,
\nsending the Brazilian collapsing to the mat, and he follows him
\ndown to bash him with punches and hammerfists. When there is no
\nfinish in sight, Young dances around to showboat and gets Herzog to
\nbring him back upright. Young beats Moises with a left hand and
\npoints at it, and he is feeling himself and motioning in a
\nDiaz-like manner any thing he lands flush. Moises stands firm and
\ndrills him with a right hand, and Young shakes it out to re-engage.
\nMoises meets him with sheer power, hurling his right hand like he
\nwants to knock the head of \u201cGee Money\u201d into the third row. Young
\ntanks the ones that connect and backs Moises to the wall, stinging
\nhim with an elbow but getting caught flush with a power right hand.
\nMoises is swinging with hammers, and Young picks him apart and has
\nhis hands up to defend from the most dangerous of attacks. Moises
\npunctuates the brawl with two punches and a head kick, and the
\nlightweights hug it out after a hard-fought contest.<\/p>\n
