On April 19, 1986, Candace Parker was born. Parker, a seven-time All-Star, won three WNBA titles with three teams: the Los Angeles Sparks, her home for her first 13 seasons after they selected her with the No. 1 pick in 2008; the Chicago Sky, whom she helped win their first championship in 2021; and the Las Vegas Sparks, for whom she played the last of her 16 seasons. She\u2019s the only player in league history to win both the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season.<\/p>\n

She is a graduate of Naperville Central who won three straight Ms. Basketball of Illinois awards from 2002-04.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Black man, died a week after suffering a spinal cord injury in the back of a Baltimore police van while he was handcuffed and shackled, prompting weeks of violent protests and unrest. (Six police officers were charged. Three were acquitted and the city\u2019s top prosecutor eventually dropped the three remaining cases.)<\/p>\n

In 2020, a gunman disguised as a police officer began a two-day series of shootings across Nova Scotia that left 22 people dead in Canada\u2019s worst mass killing incident. The suspect, Gabriel Wortman, 51, was shot and killed by police on April 20.<\/p>\n
