Watch out for hallucinations, delusions and misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a result of such immersive interactions with AI chatbots, many people are said to have \u201clost jobs, destroyed marriages and relationships, and fallen into homelessness\u201d\u00a04\u00a0and ended up in jail or involuntarily committed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/psychiatry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">psychiatric<\/a>\u00a0treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Of course, association doesn\u2019t equal causality, so a key question about this emerging phenomenon is whether these accounts describe individuals with mental illness who end up incorporating AI chatbots into their pre-existing psychotic thinking or cases in which AI chatbots truly induced\u00a0de novo\u00a0psychosis in those with no such history. While some people with AI-associated psychosis did have pre-existing mental illness, others are alleged to have occurred in those \u2026 who spent more and more time going \u201cdown the rabbit hole\u201d \u2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that, despite AI being characterized as \u201cintelligent,\u201d chatbots trained on LLMs suffer from a \u201cgarbage in, garbage out\u201d problem with limited ability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/psych-unseen\/202507\/can-ai-chatbots-worsen-psychosis-and-cause-delusions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">This is an excerpt.
