Sometimes she sees \u201cblobs of color.\u201d She has no depth or peripheral vision. She\u2019s not quite 5-foot tall but she\u2019s a dynamo, a CVI and disability advocate hell-bent on making a difference. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">      She studied photography at Mass College of Art and Design, from which she graduated in 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">In the darkroom there, she couldn\u2019t see in the low light. That helps her get great access, like here at Fenway Park covering Beep Baseball.Stan Grossfeld\/Globe Staff<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">When people find out she is a visually impaired\/blind photographer, they give her weird looks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\"> \u201cYou know when your pet looks up at you after you do something really dumb like run into a wall. That\u2019s the exact face people give me, \u201d she says with a smile. Caruso usually walks with a white cane she was initially ashamed to use, but now loves. She calls it Xi Xi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">     Caruso  was 11-months-old when she came to the Boston area. Imagine no one believing you\u2019re blind. Imagine you can\u2019t process the world around you. Imagine you never will.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">You wake up every morning and it\u2019s like a movie set. Your life is a horror movie and you can\u2019t escape. Everything, everything, everything is abstract. Nothing makes sense. Your eyes see, but your brain doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\"> Why is it a horror movie?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">\u201cBecause it\u2019s like we are in a VR (Virtual Reality) headset and walking, trying to cross the busiest street, like Mass Ave.,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img-CKUJPR6HIEESEOUFG7WQIQRTH4-image\" alt=\"&quot;I use my camera to be able to interact with the world. Like say if I'm at a family gathering, I can take photos and later I can be like, oh, that's what happened,&quot; says Caruso. &quot;I'm like, oh, that's my aunt, that's my uncle. You can\u2019t recognize people\u2019s faces. You\u2019re alone. In your world. You feel misunderstood, but you reach for your camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">You call how you see the world. Your camera becomes the eyes. You slowly start to see the world around you, but every photo you take is novel. You get excited, but slowly the photos you take open up the world to you. You get lost in photography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">Photography is something you can control. You become one with the camera. You have control. Before  the inaugural Beep Baseball game at Fenway Park that Caruso photographs, she checks her photo equipment.  Sometimes she can\u2019t see the settings on the camera. For now, she can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">\u201cI need to clean my camera. I don\u2019t know how I got chocolate on it,\u201d she says<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">    Celebrity photographer and Shot@Love podcaster Kerry Brett, one of her mentors,  gives her a pep talk outside Fenway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">\u201cTina, you\u2019re an international star and an influencer and you have millions of downloads. So you have a lot of worth and a lot of power digitally online. I saw her on \u2018Love on the Spectrum.\u2019 I\u2019m a huge fan of her and her girlfriend,\u201d says Gina Devinish, a coach with Boston Renegades, one of the teams at Fenway Park. \u201cI just needed a little fangirl moment to say \u2018Hi,\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">Caruso also greets Joe LeMar, her coach at Achilles International, which tethers runners with guides. On Saturday she completed the Boston Athletic Association\u2019s 5K.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\"> \u201cShe\u2019s an inspiring, shining light who continues to make the world a better place with every single day that I\u2019m alive and I get to see her,\u201d says LeMar, a gold medalist at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">Caruso\u2019s photo work has been published locally and she has sold several fine arts prints. But she is still looking for a photography or nongovernmental agency advocacy job. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img-Z4TRT4FMLWYIWNHJGACRUNK6YE-image\" alt=\"&quot;I found that photojournalism was going to be my pathway. She\u2019s thinking about tossing it underhanded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">During the Beep Baseball game, Caruso uses two cameras, one with a telephoto, the other a wide angle. The sunny day helps her to see better, unless she looks toward the sun.   She shoots loose and blows up the images later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">She can relate to the athletes, all of whom have varying degrees of visual impairment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\"> Some wear blindfolds to even out the playing field with those with less vision. The ball beeps and the bases -soft foam cylinders &#8211; buzz. Then, with an infectious smile, she races up to the low vision athlete. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\"> \u201cI just got an amazing photo of you,\u201d says Caruso, gushing with enthusiasm. \u201cI\u2019m a blind photographer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">\u201cOh, awesome, dude. That\u2019s awesome \u2026 good for you,\u201d says Chris Kimball, who works for Fidelity when he isn\u2019t playing for the Boston Renegades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">Their  joy feels  bigger  than when the three Red Sox outfielders converge and hug after a  victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">Kimball is happier for Caruso than he is for himself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080\">\u201cTo this day, it amazes me that people with visual impairments can do anything that anybody else can do . . .   You can\u2019t let things get in your way, if you have that mindset where you don\u2019t accept the word no, you can do great things.
