{"id":598109,"date":"2026-04-21T19:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/598109\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T19:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:06:09","slug":"mental-health-experts-highlight-resources-following-iowa-city-ped-mall-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/598109\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental health experts highlight resources following Iowa City Ped Mall shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">IOWA CITY, Iowa (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareiowa.com\/article\/news\/local\/iowa-city-shooting-mental-health-check-in-nami\/524-55602593-5cf4-41eb-afb7-c2354c9c0c64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.weareiowa.com\/article\/news\/local\/iowa-city-shooting-mental-health-check-in-nami\/524-55602593-5cf4-41eb-afb7-c2354c9c0c64\">WOI<\/a>) &#8211; In the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/2026\/04\/21\/vigil-held-victims-iowa-city-ped-mall-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/2026\/04\/21\/vigil-held-victims-iowa-city-ped-mall-shooting\/\">Sunday\u2019s shooting in Iowa City<\/a>, mental health experts say connection is especially important, because the body\u2019s natural response to a tragedy is to isolate and shut down, WOI reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Iowa says now is the perfect time to take a pause and evaluate what\u2019s going on around you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cChecking in and staying in touch and staying connected with your people is important because that is mental health,\u201d said Ryan Crane, Executive Director of NAMI Iowa. \u201cWe check in with each other, we stay connected because when we don\u2019t, that is when we isolate, that is when we shut ourselves off from the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He also shared for parents that it\u2019s important to let your kids know that it\u2019s okay to be scared, but emphasize that they are safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s ok as an adult to say we don\u2019t know why these things happen or telling them \u2018it\u2019s not your fault they couldn\u2019t have done anything to prevent it,\u2019\u201d said Crane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The University of Iowa shared support resources for students, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/counseling.uiowa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/counseling.uiowa.edu\/\">University Counseling Service<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.uiowa.edu\/assistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dos.uiowa.edu\/assistance\">Student Care and Assistance<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.uiowa.edu\/247-crisis-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.uiowa.edu\/247-crisis-support\">24-hour crisis and support line<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KCRG.
