Bill Nye<\/a> has called out Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s administration over its \u201chuge mistake\u201d as the White House eyes seismic cuts<\/a> at NASA<\/a> in its proposed 2027 fiscal year budget.<\/p>\n

The \u201cScience Guy,\u201d in an interview with NBC News\u2019 Sahil Kapur, contrasted the proposed cuts with NASA\u2019s \u201cinspirational\u201d Artemis II mission that saw astronauts using the Orion spacecraft to fly by the far side of the moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeanwhile, someone wants to, sort of \u2014 how to say, end NASA,\u201d said Nye of the White House\u2019s proposed 23% cut (or a $5 billion decrease) in overall funding<\/a> to the space agency, which includes a 46% slash to its science programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a strange time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to point to Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution<\/a>, which states that Congress has the power to \u201cpromote the Progress of Science.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe like to remind people, that\u2019s what keeps the U.S. ahead,\u201d said Nye, chief ambassador and vice chairman of The Planetary Society, a nonprofit, nongovernmental space advocacy group.<\/p>\n

He later added, \u201cYou cannot be a leader in space without being a leader in science. So this is just a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

The administration\u2019s pitch follows a similar proposal to gut NASA\u2019s science budget by nearly half<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

The beloved science TV host, in an interview with HuffPost<\/a> in the fall, stressed that the cuts would be an \u201cextraordinary waste\u201d of billions of dollars, noting that missions already operating would have their funding stripped away as a result.<\/p>\n

Congress would later shoot down<\/a> the administration\u2019s attempt to make the deep cuts at NASA, approving the agency\u2019s $24.4 billion budget in January.<\/p>\n

NASA generated an estimated $75.6 billion<\/a> into the U.S. economy in 2023.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Nye told NBC News that NASA is America\u2019s \u201cbest brand,\u201d as people around the world recognize the agency.<\/p>\n

He also questioned why the White House would pitch cuts similar to those proposed last year, noting that its budget request appears to be written in a \u201cmuch lazier\u201d fashion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are typos, they referred to 2026 instead of 2027, and they left out some language just so arbitrarily. It\u2019s just sort of cut and paste without paying attention,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nye, in an interview<\/a> with CBS News\u2019 Major Garrett, summed up the cuts as a \u201cbad idea\u201d and a \u201ctone-deaf\u201d move by the administration.<\/p>\n

He claimed that representatives from \u201ceither side of the aisle\u201d in Congress don\u2019t want to cut NASA\u2019s funding, adding that he expects they won\u2019t vote to slash the agency\u2019s budget this time around.<\/p>\n
