NAPLES, Fla. (WINK) \u2014 More than 200 golfers took part in St. Matthew\u2019s House\u2019s annual charity golf scramble in Naples on Monday.<\/p>\n
For 28 years, the event has raised money for St. Matthew\u2019s House programs serving people facing homelessness, hunger and addiction in Southwest Florida. Organizers say support from the community is critical to keeping those programs going.<\/p>\n
For Trey Coleman, the tournament was also personal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started playing golf when I was 7 years old. I played every day for about 10 years during the summer. I would play in junior golf tournaments, played in high school. I was on the golf team, I went to state,\u201d Coleman said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Coleman said\u00a0addiction later pulled him away from the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy life was a long 20 years or so doing and selling drugs. I went to prison a couple of times about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Coleman said he found help through the Justin\u2019s Place Recovery Program at St. Matthew\u2019s House. On Monday, he played in the same tournament that helps fund that work.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout the donors, it wouldn’t be possible. I wouldn’t be doing as good as I am right now,\u201d Coleman said.<\/p>\n
Another graduate of the program said St. Matthew\u2019s House changed his life after years of addiction.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was in addiction, I actually prayed for days like this. I wouldn’t be here. My daughter wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for a place like St. Matthew’s House,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

St. Matthew\u2019s House CEO Ben Bridges said the event reflects the kind of community support the organization has relied on for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, for years, we’ve been able to support our mission without receiving any government assistance. And the only way we can do that is when the community comes together, they identify the need, and they’re willing to come alongside us in this journey,\u201d Bridges said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NAPLES, Fla.
