{"id":598786,"date":"2026-04-22T02:51:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T02:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/598786\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T02:51:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T02:51:14","slug":"fans-of-scuffling-mets-mostly-stay-home-on-chilly-n-y-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/598786\/","title":{"rendered":"Fans of scuffling Mets mostly stay home on chilly N.Y. night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apr 21, 2026, 09:24 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK &#8212; Patrick Heaney, the only person in Section 524 at Citi Field shortly before the start of Tuesday night&#8217;s game between the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"d08426cc-bf13-5d7b-5217-6d4662019bc6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nym\/new-york-mets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Mets<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a6e97b3f-4244-98be-79a2-f4b33f3365e6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/min\/minnesota-twins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Twins<\/a>, grinned as he gazed at the sea of empty seats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You wouldn&#8217;t be here tonight if you weren&#8217;t a Met fan,&#8221; Heaney said.<\/p>\n<p>The skidding Mets returned home Tuesday to a quieter reception than manager Carlos Mendoza and players anticipated with the club trying to snap an 11-game losing streak &#8212; the longest for the team since 2004.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re not going to be happy, that&#8217;s not a secret,&#8221; Mendoza said. &#8220;Our fan base, they&#8217;re going to let you know when you&#8217;re not playing well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not going to be good, which is justifiably so &#8212; we&#8217;re not playing well whatsoever,&#8221; pitcher <a data-player-guid=\"635a697b-4c21-0ae7-897d-14dc811d4a3d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33244\/sean-manaea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Manaea<\/a> said. &#8220;I just expect it to not be the friendliest of welcome back home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it wasn&#8217;t. After holding an early 3-0 lead, the Mets let the Twins rally for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/game\/_\/gameId\/401815030\/twins-mets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5-3 Minnesota victory<\/a>, a stunning 12th straight loss for a team with playoff expectations. Embattled Mets closer <a data-player-guid=\"4a17f08f-b20a-2d81-ae0c-ec06266eb20e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33224\/devin-williams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Devin Williams<\/a> allowed a tiebreaking RBI single to <a data-player-guid=\"9af0cd73-1f1e-386a-be22-cd3913df9f9a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4977664\/luke-keaschall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Keaschall<\/a> in the ninth inning en route to the loss. No team has made the postseason after a season in which it lost 12 in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Shortstop <a data-player-guid=\"94848feb-9141-9679-d2cd-ae79905d969c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32129\/francisco-lindor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francisco Lindor<\/a> said following Sunday&#8217;s 2-1, 10-inning loss to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"5cda5067-7075-66b1-4b94-2333ab8d9807\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/chc\/chicago-cubs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Cubs<\/a> that he expected it to &#8220;get very loud&#8221; Tuesday night. But the few thousand fans in attendance on a brisk evening in Queens &#8212; the temperature at first pitch was 46 degrees &#8212; didn&#8217;t get loud until the third inning, when Lindor hit a three-run homer to open the scoring and give the Mets their biggest lead since a 5-2 win over the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"e072b79c-4fa1-3a55-bdcd-4d7d9734d79b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/sf\/san-francisco-giants\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Giants<\/a> on April 5.<\/p>\n<p>New York entered Tuesday hitting .200 during its skid while being outscored 62-19. The Mets didn&#8217;t have slugger <a data-player-guid=\"c0225b71-161d-fe89-5c62-d27fa64259fd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36969\/juan-soto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Soto<\/a> for any of that stretch, but he is expected to come off the injured list Wednesday after missing the past 16 games with a strained left quad.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think if they can get it going today, I think the fans will rally around them,&#8221; Josh Hudson, a Tennessee resident in town for business who was sitting in Section 509 with a $15 ticket he bought on the secondary market, said before the loss.<\/p>\n<p>Heaney, a resident of Malverne on Long Island who wore a Mets hat and 2022 playoff sweatshirt, grinned as he recalled how he ended up buying a $12 ticket and heading to the game alone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t get my wife to come,&#8221; Heaney said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t get my kids to come. I couldn&#8217;t get my friends to come. I bought one ticket, the cheapest one I could find, and I&#8217;m going to see if I can help them turn it around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza, in his third season as manager after six seasons on the Yankees&#8217; coaching staff, said he wouldn&#8217;t mind a frosty reception because he knows how fans will react if the team fares better.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re also going to be right behind you when we flip it around,&#8221; Mendoza said before the loss. &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen that before, too, so it&#8217;s nothing new for us that have been here. We expect those guys to continue to support us, but we&#8217;ve got to do better for them too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all part of it. It comes with the territory.
