There were hazy skies over the metro on Saturday and indeed over much of Minnesota.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can barely see the skyline,\u201d explains Bria Knorr, from Minneapolis. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of hidden behind an orange haze.\u201d<\/p>\n
That haze is a smoky fallout from Canadian wildfires.<\/p>\n
Our northern neighbor is battling the second-worst wildfire season on record.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve lived in Minnesota my whole life, and only in the last few years have had to deal with these days you can\u2019t go outside or you\u2019re reluctant to go outside,\u201d Knorr says.<\/p>\n
Experts say the whole state is impacted, with unhealthy air in northeastern Minnesota, including the North Shore and northern Wisconsin.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unhealthy for some farther south, including the metro. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you have to go outside, you might consider wearing an N95 mask,\u201d notes HCMC Emergency Physician Stephen Dunlop.<\/p>\n
Some people were wearing masks Saturday, but Dunlop says the best medicine is to limit your time outdoors.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes people are going to go out, and trying to exert themselves or do yard work, these things certainly put you at risk when the air\u2019s like this,\u201d Dunlop added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, we\u2019re retired nurses, so we agree with that,\u201d said Janice Kuball from St. Paul. \u201cEspecially if you have any respiratory issues, you should stay indoors probably.\u201d<\/p>\n
Experts say seniors and the very young are the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n
Knorr and her family, including her 5-month-old baby, are keeping their outdoor time short.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were debating whether we wanted to be outside or if we should go home. We decided to just go for a short walk,\u201d said Ardeshir Ebtehaj from Minneapolis.<\/p>\n
