MARSHALL \u2014 Fitzgibbon Hospital and The Living Center in Marshall have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.<\/p>\n
In the news release, the hospital board of trustees says a partner has already been secured to help sell the facility. The board also claims the Chapter 11 process will allow the hospital and the Living Center to continue normal operations without disruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur priority is, and always will be, the health and well-being of the communities we serve,\u201d\u00a0 President and Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Angy Littrell\u00a0says in the release. \u201cFiling for Chapter 11 gives us the time and structure needed to address financial challenges while continuing to provide the critical services our patients and residents depend on every day.”<\/p>\n
The release says employees will continue to be paid and patients and residents will continue to receive care. Anyone with appointments for office visits or procedures should keep them and arrive as instructed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The board says the hospital has faced growing financial pressures for the past few years including rising operating costs, workforce shortages and reimbursement at less than cost from Medicare and Medicaid. The board also cites non-payment or underpayment for services provided from commercial insurers as a cause for the hospital’s financial problems. Fitzgibbon is a private not-for-profit hospital that only receives revenue from its services and donations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThese actions allow us to maintain services and explore opportunities for long-term sustainability,\u201d Board of Trustees President Bud Summers says in the release.<\/p>\n
Other cost-cutting measures the hospital has taken in recent years include closing its intensive care united impatient behavioral health unit, home health and hospice agencies, chiropractic clinic and closing to rural health clinics in Fayette and Brunswick. The hospital currently has a 44-acre parcel of land adjacent to the hospital campus under contract for sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to assure the community that our doors remain open, and we will continue to focus on offering quality health care while we work through this period,” Littrell says in the release. “Our hope is to continue to provide healthcare for the next 100 years, and we appreciate the continued support of our employees, medical staff, patients, volunteers and the broader community who know how vital Fitzgibbon is to the economy and health of our area.
