\n\tDC Studios has released the trailer for \u201cClayface<\/a>,\u201d which hits theaters on Oct. 23.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe horror film, which is directed by James Watkins, will track the origins of the shape-shifting villain, played by Tom Rhys Harries. Clayface, who starts as struggling actor Matt Hagen, receives a highly experimental medical procedure after his face is disfigured in a knife attack. Although the experiment is successful at first, things ultimately don\u2019t go as planned, as the actor\u2019s body turns into clay that reshapes itself into anyone\u2019s appearance.<\/p>\n

\n\tDC Studios gave theater owners a first look at the trailer during this year\u2019s CinemaCon<\/a>. It opens with Matt in a hospital bed with a bloody, bandaged face. After being attacked by a knife-wielding assailant, he\u2019s injected with mysterious chemicals, which grant him his shapeshifting powers. We see Matt\u2019s face morph in rapid succession, showing him without a mouth or eyes at some points. In the trailer\u2019s final moments, we see him completely wipe away his face while in a bathtub. The trailer also shows Clayface\u2019s shadow as he morphs his hand into a giant, mace-shaped fist. <\/p>\n

\n\tClayface is one of the earliest Batman antagonists, first introduced in 1940 as a washed-up actor turned criminal who wears a clay-like mask of a character he once played.\u00a0In 1961, Clayface\u2019s shape-shifting abilities were established. This is the character\u2019s big-screen introduction after being portrayed in several live-action and animated \u201cBatman\u201d adaptations, including by Ron Perlman on \u201cBatman: The Animated Series\u201d in the 1990s, Brian McManamon on the 2010s Fox series \u201cGotham\u201d and most recently by Alan Tudyk on the HBO Max animated comedy \u201cHarley Quinn.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHarries\u2019 other acting credits include \u201cWhite Lines,\u201d \u201cThe Gentlemen,\u201d Uberto Pasolini\u2019s \u201cThe Return\u201d and \u201cSuspicion.\u201d Naomi Ackie will also star in the movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tJames Gunn launched his DC Universe with last year\u2019s \u201cSuperman.\u201d The studio has \u201cSupergirl,\u201d directed by Craig Gillespie, coming on Jun 26. Other upcoming DC titles include the \u201cSuperman\u201d sequel \u201cMan of Tomorrow,\u201d set for July 9, 2027, and Matt Reeves\u2019 \u201cThe Batman: Part II,\u201d coming Oct. 1, 2027.<\/p>\n
