Help me, Doc.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynro000o356qdv5jq7ow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019ve seen the entire spectrum \u2014 couples referred after she checked out fine, men getting a semen analysis before they start trying to conceive, others who just want to know where they stand before fertility becomes urgent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrp000p356quh5hng10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No symptoms. No warning signs. Just a result they did not see coming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrr000q356qqv8xx5xb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most men already know stress can affect mood, libido and erections. What they do not realize is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/04\/health\/stress-health-connection-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constantly feeling under pressure<\/a> may also affect sperm health. Fertility problems are rarely caused by stress alone, but stress may be one overlooked piece of the picture.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        What stress does to your body<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrv000s356qudq6p70c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A lot of men think stress is just a mindset problem that lives in your head. But stress changes what your body does.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrv000t356q0ppevqn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When stress hits, the body releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. This release is part of the body\u2019s built-in alarm system helping you respond to stressful situations. In the short term, that response can be helpful. But when stress sticks around for weeks or months, the body starts paying a price: Sleep suffers. Energy drops. Mood changes. Weight increases. Libido drops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrv000u356qe300qa6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It takes about two to three months for sperm to be produced, mature and show up in the semen. That is one reason chronic stress may matter more than a short-lived stretch of stress. Months of burnout, poor sleep and constant pressure can start to show up in ways men do not always expect \u2014 including fertility.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrw000v356qhuxs4wcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chronic stress may also raise oxidative stress in the body, which can damage sperm directly. Research has linked higher stress levels with worse semen parameters, including lower sperm count and poorer sperm movement and shape. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26477499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">One study of more than 1,200 men<\/a> found that those with the highest stress levels had significantly lower sperm concentration and total sperm count than men with intermediate stress levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Why stress and fertility often travel together<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynry000x356qmqpesiq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Men dealing with chronic stress tend to fall into patterns that compound the problem \u2014 they often have poor sleep, exercise less, experience weight gain and have more reliance on substances.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo97f10100063b6qbuqspgck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some are simply too mentally drained to notice what their body has been telling them for months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynrz000y356qjenqa2jn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When I evaluate men for fertility concerns, I don\u2019t just ask about sex. I ask about all those other factors: sleep, mood, work stress, weight changes, exercise, substance use and overall health. Fertility is usually not one-variable medicine. Issues often stem from several factors moving in the wrong direction at the same time \u2014 and stress is frequently what sets them in motion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns00010356qrk9lthpk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One thing men often miss is that fertility and sexual performance are not the same thing. A man can have no issues in the bedroom and still have underlying sperm problems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns10011356qc89xmfeg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Couples are generally advised to seek fertility evaluation after one year of trying to conceive without success if the female partner is younger than 35, and after six months if she is 35 or older. But you do not have to wait for a problem to get checked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns10012356qyeqn77ko@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you already have risk factors \u2014 prior testicular problems, chemotherapy, certain surgeries, genetic conditions or hormone issues \u2014 it may be a good idea to get evaluated sooner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns10013356qa0y08ci4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A semen analysis is often one of the first and most useful steps. It looks at sperm count, movement and shape. Depending on the situation, a more complete workup may also include a physical exam, hormone testing and sometimes imaging or genetic evaluation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns10014356qws18vwvb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many tests such as the semen analysis can now be done at home, making that information easier to obtain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns30016356q6zwvvz74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When I sit with a guy in my office, the first thing I say is that he is not alone, and there are ways we can help. It starts with a conversation, some lab work and an exam. And it takes patience \u2014 because improving things down there does not happen overnight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns30017356q1bm51lr7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That does not mean the answer is simply to \u201crelax.\u201d Real stress is real stress. Work demands, financial pressure, family strain and the emotional toll of fertility struggles do not disappear because someone is told to calm down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns30018356qt0kgqy38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But men can start by looking honestly at the habits stress may be driving. Are you sleeping enough? Moving your body? Eating reasonably well? Drinking too much? Using nicotine or marijuana more often? Avoiding dealing with your feelings? Not going to see a doctor because life feels too busy?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns30019356qk9tarmkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One thing I tell almost all stressed-out patients that they do not expect: Get off the Facebook groups and social media feeds. The gender reveals. The glamour baby shots. The announcements. If you are already struggling, that content is not inspiration \u2014 it\u2019s fuel for anxiety and a fast track to feeling inadequate. That stress is real, and you can cut it off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns5001b356q5489rf26@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sleep affects testosterone production \u2014 and testosterone is essential for sperm development. Most men need seven to nine hours. Consistently getting less than that is not just fatigue but a hormonal problem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns5001c356q0i49o51y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regular physical activity helps regulate hormones, reduce cortisol and maintain a healthy weight. It does not have to be intense \u2014 consistent movement matters more than hitting the gym hard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns5001d356qtvvpf8lv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Excess weight raises estrogen levels in men, which can suppress testosterone and disrupt the hormonal signals that drive sperm production. Even modest weight loss can shift things in the right direction.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns5001e356qjfnrn8am@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nicotine, marijuana and excess alcohol have all been linked to lower sperm count, poor motility and abnormal shape. Cutting back is one of the more direct changes a man can make.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kyns5001f356qpvagjv9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nutrition matters, too. A diet high in processed foods and low in antioxidants does not give the body what it needs to produce healthy sperm. More whole foods, less junk \u2014 it\u2019s not complicated.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Male fertility is a whole-body health issue<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynsc001h356q6z7n5i9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If chronic stress is wearing down the body, fertility may be one more place where that shows up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo95jpwz00013b6ql2tja0pr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The more men understand the impact of stress, the sooner we can stop treating male fertility like an afterthought and start treating it as an important part of overall health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo7kynsc001i356q8evkbaz7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Male fertility is not just about making sperm \u2014 it\u2019s also about the health of the person making it.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmo7kluvw000m356qiqvdib6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Get inspired by a weekly roundup on living well, made simple.
