But don&#8217;t be alarmed \u202a\u2014\u202c the strange structures did not originate from monstrous aliens. Instead, they may have ties to ancient water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA&#8217;s Curiosity rover snapped the photos of the peculiar rocks as it was driving toward Antofagasta \u2014 a relatively young, 33-foot-wide (10 meters) impact crater located on the slopes of Mount Sharp (also called Aeolis Mons), which stands in the larger Gale crater, near Mars&#8217; equator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A pair of black-and-white photos of the &#8220;scales&#8221; was <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/raw_images\/1577337\/?site=msl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:released by NASA;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">released by NASA<\/a> April 14, while a close-up color image of the rocks was <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/kevinmgill.bsky.social\/post\/3mjk4dzfhqk24\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:shared online;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">shared online<\/a> the next day by <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apoapsys.com\/work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Kevin M. Gill;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kevin M. Gill<\/a>, a software and spaceflight engineer at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) who specializes in image processing. (The pics were captured April 7 and April 13, respectively \u2014 also called Sol 4859 and Sol 4865 in Martian time.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The unusual shape and tight clustering of these rocks have drawn <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/space\/nasa-mars-rover-crater-rocks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:comparisons to the scales of reptiles;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">comparisons to the scales of reptiles<\/a> such as <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/alligator-crocodile-news-features-articles-172455065.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:crocodilians;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crocodilians<\/a>, while some commenters joked that the formations look dragon-like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is currently unclear how many of the scale-like rocks were photographed or how large they are, but they stretched across the ground &#8220;for meters and meters,&#8221; according to an April 10 <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blog\/curiosity-blog-sols-4859-4866-one-small-crater-and-thousands-of-polygons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:NASA blog post;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NASA blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Side-by-side black and white photos of polygon covered rocks on Mars that look like giant reptile scales\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/00dd012b73842da17d6b415531644651.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Curiosity snapped several photos of the scaly rocks stretching &#8220;for meters and meters&#8221; as it drove toward Antofagasta. | Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/MSSS<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although the researchers were not shocked to see these multifaced rocks, or &#8220;polygons,&#8221; they were surprised by the sheer quantity of them in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Many of the rocks we&#8217;ve driven over have these incredible textures \u2014 thousands of honeycomb-shaped polygons crisscross their surface,&#8221; <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/fraeman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Abigail Fraeman;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Abigail Fraeman<\/a>, a planetary scientist at JPL, wrote in the blog post. &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen polygon-patterned rocks like these before, but they didn&#8217;t seem quite this dramatically abundant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Polygons with a similar honeycomb-like shape have been seen before on Mars on both <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/bizarre-polygons-mars-surface-hint-154519157.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:smaller;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smaller<\/a> and <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mars-polygons-ice-sublimation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:larger;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">larger<\/a> scales. In these past instances, the shapes were often tied to the drying of wet mud or ice crystals moving beneath the Martian surface. However, it is too early for scientists to tell exactly how the latest shapes formed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Curiosity has collected &#8220;lots of images and chemical data that will help us distinguish between different hypotheses for how the honeycomb textures formed,&#8221; Fraeman said.<\/p>\n<p>Animal impostors<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Before reaching Antofagasta, Curiosity spent the better part of a year <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/gigantic-spiderwebs-mars-next-big-170609076.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:studying a series of rocky ridges;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studying a series of rocky ridges<\/a> on Mount Sharp dubbed &#8220;boxwork.&#8221; These features are also <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/mars-rover-captures-first-close-133722842.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:known as Martian &quot;spiderwebs&quot;;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known as Martian &#8220;spiderwebs&#8221;<\/a> because of how they zigzag across the ground, and the wandering robot recently <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/giant-spiderwebs-mars-contain-tiny-160535292.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:spotted tiny, egg-like spheroids;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spotted tiny, egg-like spheroids<\/a> stuck to their sides.
