Michael Douglas has pushed back on claims that he and Sharon Stone argued in a chance meeting before starring in Basic Instinct together.<\/p>\n

Stone, who recounted her break out role as villainess Catherine Tramell in the 1992 erotic thriller, said in a Business Insider<\/a> interview Friday that Douglas was initially hesitant to \u201cput his bare ass out on the screen with an unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t even test with me, but that was also for a different reason: We had an argument prior to that,\u201d Stone said. <\/p>\n

The argument is in reference to a fight between the pair at Cannes Film Festival, where Douglas apparently talked about one of Stone\u2019s acquaintances and their kids. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo I said something and he responded to me, saying, \u2018What the f— do you know?\u2019 It was in regard to a father-child relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair took the conflict outside, Stone says, where it eventually ended on peaceful terms. <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, and I explained to him what the f— I knew about this family he was speaking about, and that I was best friends with the children and the parent. And then we parted. I wouldn\u2019t say as best friends, but amicably. So, fast forward to casting \u201cBasic Instinct,\u201d I don\u2019t think he wanted me to be his costar,” Stone said. <\/p>\n

Douglas, now 80 years old, has a different rendition of their first meeting. <\/p>\n

He was \u201cvery surprised\u201d to hear Stone\u2019s statements, according to his representative, Allen Burry, who spoke to People<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t remember any argument in that timeframe\u201d between them, and instead \u201conly remembers seeing and meeting Sharon for the first time when he saw [director] Paul Verhoeven\u2019s screen test of her for Basic Instinct and [Michael] said, \u2018Absolutely, she\u2019s the one,\u2019” Burry continues.<\/p>\n

Douglas\u2019 only recollection of spending time with Stone at Cannes was after they had already filmed Basic Instinct and were promoting it at the festival. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd by the time they\u2019d done the movie, they were friends,\u201d Burry said. <\/p>\n

Despite their alleged differences, Stone has similarly said since co-starring in the film, the two eventually \u201cbecame the greatest of friends, to this day.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI admire him tremendously,\u201d the 67-year-old said.<\/p>\n

If anything, the supposed conflict helped their on-screen chemistry, Stone tells Business Insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt worked great because I was not rattled if he yelled at me,\u201d the actress said. \u201cThat was interesting for the character because Michael has a temper, and I didn\u2019t care.
