Michael Jackson\u2019s<\/a> famous clan stepped out to celebrate the premiere of the new \u201cMichael\u201d<\/a> biopic, but some of the Jacksons snubbed the event and have opposed the film.<\/p>\n

On Monday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, several members of the Jackson family gushed about the Antoine Fuqua-helmed film, which depicts the origin story of the King of Pop and follows the hitmaker from childhood through his upward trajectory to superstar status in the 1980s. <\/p>\n

Michael Jackson\u2019s nephew Jaafar Jackson<\/a>, son of Jermaine Jackson, starred in the title role, and his aunts and uncles dropped accolades for his performance in red carpet interviews. Marlon Jackson said<\/a>, \u201cWatching the movie, sometimes we think we\u2019re watching Michael up there, that\u2019s how good he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

La Toya Jackson called his performance \u201cabsolutely excellent\u201d and echoed Marlon, saying that she forgot she was watching Jaafar: \u201cI thought I was watching my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

But not all of the Jacksons were up for celebrating the film. Most notably absent were the \u201cBeat It\u201d singer\u2019s pop star sister, Janet Jackson<\/a>, and his daughter, Paris Jackson. The eldest of the siblings, Rebbie Jackson, also skipped the event. And although the film includes portrayals of many of the Jackson siblings, some also asked to be left out of the biopic, including Janet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish everybody was in the movie,\u201d La Toya Jackson <\/a>told Variety at the premiere. \u201cShe was asked and she kindly declined, so you have to respect her wishes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, rumors began to swirl that the \u201cAll for You\u201d singer attended a family screening of the film and wasn\u2019t pleased. Page Six reported that Janet and Jermaine got into a spat, with Janet critiquing almost every scene. <\/p>\n

At Monday\u2019s premiere, \u201cEntertainment Tonight\u201d asked La Toya about the controversy, which she was quick to shut down. \u201cThere was absolutely no problem whatsoever, none whatsoever,\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cPlease believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although both of Michael Jackson\u2019s sons, Prince and Bigi, have supported events for the film (Prince attended Monday\u2019s premiere, and Bigi attended a Berlin premiere last week), and Prince served as an executive producer and was regularly on set, Paris Jackson has been vocal about her lack of involvement. <\/p>\n

Last year, she posted on social media that she gave feedback on an early draft of the film, but her notes weren\u2019t addressed. \u201cI\u2019ve left it alone,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not my project, they\u2019re going to make whatever they\u2019re going to make.\u201d <\/p>\n

Paris Jackson, who works in the entertainment industry as a model, actor and musician, said she had stayed quiet about her feelings toward the \u201csugar-coated\u201d project because she knew many people would be happy with it. \u201cThe film panders to a very specific section of my dad\u2019s fandom that still lives in the fantasy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing about these biopics is, it\u2019s Hollywood. It\u2019s fantasy land. It\u2019s not real, but it\u2019s sold to you as real,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe narrative is being controlled, and there\u2019s a lot of inaccuracy, and there\u2019s a lot of full blown lies, and at the end of the day, that doesn\u2019t really fly with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In earlier drafts of the \u201cMichael\u201d script, plot points included sexual abuse allegations<\/a> brought by 13-year-old Jordan Chandler in 1993. Reportedly, the Michael Jackson estate became aware of a contract that legally barred the dramatization of the Chandler family and had to scrap parts of the script. <\/p>\n

The film was originally set to premiere last year, but the production needed a new ending and weeks of reshoots to make the new iteration of the film work. In the version that hit theaters this week, \u201cMichael\u201d concludes in 1988, with a teaser for a potential Part 2. <\/p>\n

Colman Domingo<\/a> and Nia Long, who portray Michael Jackson\u2019s parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson, appeared on \u201cToday\u201d<\/a> this week and addressed the elephant in the movie theater. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe film takes place from the \u201860s to 1988, so it does not go into the first allegations,\u201d Domingo said. \u201cBasically, we center it on the makings of Michael. So it\u2019s an intimate portrait of who Michael is … through his eyes. So that\u2019s what this film is.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there\u2019s a possibility of there being a Part 2 that may deal with some other things that happen afterward,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is about the making of Michael, how he was raised, and then how he was trying to find his voice as an artist and be a solo artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
