{"id":601560,"date":"2026-04-23T12:34:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T12:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601560\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T12:34:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T12:34:19","slug":"uzbekistan-unveils-yurt-inspired-pavilion-and-bread-making-exhibition-in-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601560\/","title":{"rendered":"Uzbekistan unveils yurt-inspired pavilion and bread-making exhibition in Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/promotions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Promotion<\/a>:\u00a0architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kulapat-yantrasast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kulapat Yanatrast<\/a> has unveiled a garden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilion<\/a> modelled on a &#8220;deconstructed yurt&#8221; alongside an exhibition exploring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/uzbekistan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uzbek<\/a> craft traditions and bread-making practices at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/milan-design-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milan design week<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Titled <a href=\"https:\/\/acdf.uz\/programs\/14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">When Apricots Blossom<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/exhibitions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition<\/a> takes over Palazzo Citterio from 20 to 26 April and marks the country&#8217;s debut at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is named after a 1930s poem by Uzbek writer Hamid Olimjon, with its themes of renewal and resilience echoed throughout the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318644 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video_dezeen_2364_c.jpeg\" alt=\"Facade of Palazzo Citterio decorated with colourful textile and tassel installations for the When Apricots Blossom exhibition\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>The exhibition takes over Palazzo Citterio during this year&#8217;s Milan design week<\/p>\n<p>The project was commissioned by Gayane Umerova, chairperson of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acdf.uz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation<\/a> (ACDF), and curated by Yantrasast, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/why-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHY Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition focuses on Karakalpakstan in northwestern Uzbekistan, where the Aral Sea has lost around 90 per cent of its volume since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>It will also feature Where the Water Ends, a film directed by Manuel Correa and Marina Otero Verzier. The trailer is shown above, while the film will have its world premiere during Milan design week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318643 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776947656_851_when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video_dezeen_2364_c.jpeg\" alt=\"Large circular pavilion with a latticed timber structure and layered canopy set within a garden\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>WHY Architecture created a pavilion informed by traditional nomadic yurts<\/p>\n<p>Yantrasast developed the project following research trips across the country, identifying bread-making, yurt-building and tassel weaving as key regional crafts through which design can respond to environmental change.<\/p>\n<p>Structured around the themes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/food\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/shelters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shelter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/textiles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">textiles<\/a>, the exhibition explores how essential needs have historically been addressed through local materials and shared knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318648 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video-hero_dezeen_2.jpeg\" alt=\"View looking up through the pavilion's radial timber lattice structure with circular openings\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>The structure reinterprets the yurt&#8217;s lattice framework as a gathering space<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The yurt is one of the most honest pieces of architecture ever made,&#8221; Yantrasast added, describing it as an exploration of how architecture can &#8220;hold absence&#8221; in response to the loss of the Aral Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the main exhibition, the focus shifts to Uzbekistan&#8217;s bread-making traditions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318638 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776947658_256_when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video_dezeen_2364_c.jpeg\" alt=\"Decorative bread tray lined with patterned fabric displayed on a plinth within the exhibition\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Designers reinterpreted traditional bread trays used in Uzbek baking<\/p>\n<p>Twelve international designers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bethan-laura-wood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bethan Laura Wood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/fernando-laposse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fernando Laposse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/marcin-rusak\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcin Rusak<\/a>, collaborated with Uzbek and Karakalpak artisans to reinterpret traditional bread trays and stamps known as chekich, which are used to imprint patterns into dough.<\/p>\n<p>Working across materials including wood, ceramics, felt and reeds, the objects translate regional textures and motifs into contemporary design.<\/p>\n<p>The works are displayed amongst undulating, reed-like forms designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/why-site.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHY Architecture<\/a>, referencing the landscapes of Karakalpakstan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776947659_695_when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video_dezeen_2364_c.jpeg\" alt=\"Wooden bread stamps with carved circular patterns displayed on metal rods\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Traditional stamps known as chekich are used to imprint patterns into bread<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition also introduces a number of initiatives focused on the Aral Sea region, where environmental degradation has reshaped local ecosystems and communities.<\/p>\n<p>These include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aral.school\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aral School<\/a>, a postgraduate programme exploring design&#8217;s role in ecological challenges, as well as the next edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aral.culture.summit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aral Culture Summit<\/a>, set to take place in Nukus in September 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318645 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776947659_972_when-apricots-blossom-uzbekistan-exhibition-kulapat-yantrasast-milan-design-week-video_dezeen_2364_c.jpeg\" alt=\"Exhibition with red lighting and dense vertical rods surrounding display plinths\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Works are displayed among reed-like forms referencing the Karakalpakstan landscape<\/p>\n<p>According to Umerova, the exhibition positions craft and design as tools for regeneration in regions affected by the climate crisis, while highlighting the knowledge and traditions of local communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Aral Sea is both a cautionary tale and an opportunity to offer a blueprint for other regions facing extreme environmental change,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In such contexts, design and craft play an important role because they begin with people and knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additional designers and studios taking part include Studio CoPain, Sevara Haydarova-Donazzan, Glithero, Bobir Klichev, Konstantin Lazarev, Nifemi Marcus-Bello, Raw-Edges, Ruben Saakyan, Roman Shtengauer, Sanne Visser, Kulapat Yantrasast and Didi Ng Wing Yin.<\/p>\n<p>The Uzbek craftspeople involved include Shukurjon Azimov, Nigora Amangeldieva, Boburjon Atabayev, Abdulla Abdurazzokov, Abdulvahid Bukhoriy, Otabek Gaybullayev, Madina Kasimbayeva, Nursultan Qosbergenov, Lyudmila Yusupova, Yorqinoy Yuldasheva, Biybisara Kunnazarova and Altinay Naubetova.<\/p>\n<p>Access to the exhibition and public programme requires registration <a href=\"https:\/\/acdf.artsvp.com\/d22383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">via this link<\/a>, including for walk-ins.
