{"id":601596,"date":"2026-04-23T13:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601596\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T13:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:01:13","slug":"tap-water-safety-1-in-5-people-may-drink-nitrate-contaminants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601596\/","title":{"rendered":"Tap water safety: 1 in 5 people may drink nitrate contaminants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoahv34i000x2dqm2uhv6wt8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over 62 million Americans \u2014 roughly 1 in 5 people \u2014 may be exposed to potentially dangerous levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/tsp\/substances\/toxsubstance.aspx?toxid=258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nitrates<\/a> in their tap water, a new report has shown.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n1000j3b6qme2wg0yv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A compound of nitrogen and oxygen found naturally in air, water, soil and plants, nitrates become a health risk when rainfall causes nitrogen-rich fertilizers used in agriculture to leach into groundwater, streams and rivers and end up in public water systems miles downstream.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000k3b6q1uhz0dn4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Invisible, tasteless and odorless, nitrates at low concentrations in drinking water have been linked to thyroid disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40233199\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gastric<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/epidem\/abstract\/2017\/09000\/ingested_nitrate,_disinfection_by_products,_and.10.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> kidney,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/epidem\/abstract\/2020\/01000\/ingested_nitrate_and_nitrite_and_bladder_cancer_in.16.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bladde<\/a>r and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40628182\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">colon<\/a> cancers, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33949893\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">preterm births<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36631499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">birth defects<\/a>, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/ToxProfiles\/tp204-c3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health harms<\/a>, according to the report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/drinking-water-almost-1-5-americans-contains-nitrates-linked-cancer-and-birth-defects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">released Thursday<\/a> by the Environmental Working Group, or EWG, a nonprofit health advocacy organization.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000l3b6q3czg7lij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thirteen-year-old Ben is so concerned about nitrates in the tap water of his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, that he recently sent his local congressman a letter and poem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000m3b6qtwzj1vp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI remember when I could drink water from the faucet, but now it is a health concern,\u201d Ben wrote Iowa State Rep. Dr. Austin Baeth. \u201cPlease don\u2019t ignore this problem!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000n3b6qaeyao9d7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Des Moines is a hot spot for nitrate pollution in source water, with levels so high in local rivers the city had to build one of the largest nitrate removal plants in the world. The cost to operate is more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmww.com\/news_detail_T37_R328.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$10,000 a day<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000o3b6qmgha6i2c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve read Ben\u2019s letter and poem numerous times, and I still get choked up,\u201d said Baeth, an internist who is calling attention to Iowa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1964197800832929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nitrate levels<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1174222404371341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hard-hitting<\/a>, sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1230012152657453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">satirical<\/a> videos on social media. \u201cIsn\u2019t it sad children have to worry about water that might be harming their health?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>      <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@austinbaeth4iowa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@austinbaeth4iowa?refer=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@austinbaeth4iowa<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u2019s kids are writing about our water pollution, asking the adults to do something. <a title=\"water\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/water?refer=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">#water<\/a> <a title=\"iowa\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/iowa?refer=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">#iowa<\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - Austin Baeth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7629808977525885709?refer=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u266c original sound &#8211; Austin Baeth<\/a>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000q3b6quqd2l8lf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Federal guidelines established in 1962 \u2014 which have never been updated \u2014set nitrate safety levels at <a href=\"https:\/\/nc.water.usgs.gov\/reports\/fs24196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">10 milligrams per liter<\/a>. A growing number of peer-reviewed studies, however, show an association with health impacts at 5 milligrams, 3 milligrams, and even as low as <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1029\/2021GH000419\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2 milligrams per liter<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000r3b6q1b97qkcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To see how many Americans are exposed to nitrates at those lower concentrations, researchers used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/tapwater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EWG tap water database<\/a>, which aggregates data from nearly 50,000 public water systems in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000s3b6qi1mc3x36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe used measurements of nitrates in public drinking water between 2021 and 2023 in cities and towns in all 50 states, mapping exposure down to 3 milligrams per liter,\u201d said report author Anne Schechinger, EWG\u2019s senior director of agriculture and climate research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000t3b6q0mm26hx1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a <a href=\"https:\/\/ewg.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/instant\/basic\/index.html?appid=07f5f4b2880c485b993715d33a11c066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first-of-its-kind map<\/a> \u2014 no one has done this before,\u201d Schechinger said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s searchable by zip code so people can go and check their own levels of nitrates and other contaminants.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000u3b6qwk92zvai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report does not cover private well water, which is not regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000v3b6q2hin99ho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 6,000 community water systems, serving more than 62.1 million people, tested at or above the 3 milligrams per liter of nitrates, according to the report. Studies have linked these levels to <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1029\/2021GH000419\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pediatric cancers<\/a> and other health harms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000w3b6qfbvpzm3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 3,200 of the 6,000 systems tested at or above 5 milligrams per liter, a level connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14569178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">colorectal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40370528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ovarian cancer<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000x3b6q0aoo579q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which serves nearly 4 million people, tested at or above 3 milligrams per liter on 255 different occasions, the report found. Other major cities with more than 1 million residents that also tested at 3 milligrams per liter or above included Phoenix; Philadelphia; Las Vegas; San Jose, California; and Columbus, Ohio.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n2000y3b6q8hrrvuyg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesperson for The Fertilizer Institute, which represents industry, told CNN in an email that US farmers have doubled corn production over the past three decades with just a slight increase in fertilizer use.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoam51fd00003b6u0j2r1yk2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNitrate is a naturally occurring compound found throughout the environment,\u201d said TFI Vice President of Public Affairs Christopher Glen. \u201cWhile fertilizer is one source, others include organic matter mineralization, septic systems, urban stormwater, and atmospheric nitrogen deposition from industrial and vehicle emissions. Attributing elevated nitrate levels in drinking water primarily to fertilizer use, as the EWG report implies, oversimplifies a complex issue.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300103b6qs1ddhvek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 3 million people, served by 606 water systems in the US, were exposed to nitrates at or above the legal limit of 10 milligrams per liter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300113b6qxgbd6y4d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Seventy of those systems had nitrate levels at or above 20 milligrams per liter, twice the federal limit. Another 21 systems contained levels at 30 milligrams per liter or even higher: A water system serving 31 people near Dinuba, California, tested at 50 milligrams per liter \u2014 the highest in the nation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300123b6qsaerygqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most of the communities with the highest levels were quite small, serving under 1,000 people, but not all. More than half a million people in Fresno, California, used tap water with up to 14 milligrams of nitrate per liter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300133b6qwzpkulnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 35,000 people in Garden City, Kansas, were exposed to up to 37 milligrams of nitrate per liter, while some 32,000 people in Laverne, California, used tap water with 26 milligrams per liter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300143b6q9xpguo9q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNearly all of the water systems with extremely high levels are groundwater systems that obtain their water from local wells,\u201d said biologist and chemist Christopher Jones, a former research engineer at the University of Iowa who monitored the state\u2019s water quality. Today, Jones is running to be Iowa\u2019s next secretary of agriculture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300153b6q36a2gtq8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHaving 40 milligrams per liter in groundwater is not unheard of, not at all,\u201d said Jones, who was not involved in the EWG report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300163b6q403j3juc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The primary sources of nitrates in groundwater are from livestock manure and other nitrogen-rich fertilizers placed on crops by farmers and ranchers, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300173b6qm48awuum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Without proper safeguards, rainfall and water irrigation flow easily into groundwater and into wells, while also spilling into rivers and streams that feed into public water systems. And you don\u2019t have to be close to agriculture to be affected, Schechinger said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300183b6q0c8rnu9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe nitrate contamination can affect people far, far downstream from farms,\u201d she said. \u201cYour water may come from a reservoir outside your major city, but the stream or the river that feeds that reservoir comes from miles and miles upstream where farms may be.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n300193b6qhejynnfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAlthough it\u2019s an agricultural issue, it affects people across the country in really tiny, rural towns and really large cities,\u201d Schechinger said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001b3b6qejb7q5vb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Public water systems that regularly test at levels above the legal limit of 10 milligrams per liter are required to notify residents and take action to clean the water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001c3b6q8e9q09ge@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That requires expensive mitigation systems \u2014 costs that water utilities often pass on to the consumer. Des Moines spent more than <a href=\"https:\/\/cms9files.revize.com\/desmoineswater\/Nitrate%20Removal%20Facility.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$4 million in 1990<\/a> to construct its ion-exchange treatment plant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001d3b6qt2qh2c4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For consumers, the best choice is a reverse osmosis system, which forces water through a semipermeable membrane that captures up to 99% of contaminants, Jones said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001e3b6q4b4yxfqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou want to put the reverse osmosis system on your cold-water kitchen tap and then use that for drinking and for making coffee and cooking,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no need to put it on the whole house \u2014 there\u2019s no risk associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/reviews\/best-shower-filters?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bathing<\/a> in high-nitrate water or washing dishes and the like.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001f3b6qm34urww5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you use water from a filter on a refrigerator, that also needs to be connected to the reverse osmosis system, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001g3b6q73v3mj38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDon\u2019t turn to bottled water as a solution \u2014 it\u2019s less regulated in general than tap water,\u201d Schechinger said. \u201cJust look up your zip code in our tap water database to see if you need to filter or not. We also provide information about at-home water filters as well.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001h3b6qdxrodihh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Until tighter regulations are passed, it\u2019s up to the consumer to decide on a course of action, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaie2n3001i3b6q9x6ryzjo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a peace-of-mind issue,\u201d Jones said. \u201cIf you know the water coming out of your tap is above 3 milligrams per liter of nitrates and you want peace of mind, then I think a reverse osmosis system on the kitchen cold tap is advisable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmoaj5xlw00023b6ufvempono@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Get inspired by a weekly roundup on living well, made simple.
