{"id":601913,"date":"2026-04-23T16:33:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601913\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T16:33:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:33:09","slug":"california-tax-credits-for-films-include-simpsons-sequel-laverne-cox-movie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/601913\/","title":{"rendered":"California Tax Credits For Films Include &#8216;Simpsons&#8217; Sequel, Laverne Cox Movie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn the same day that <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/david-zaslav\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-zaslav\" data-tag=\"david-zaslav\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Zaslav<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/03\/david-zaslav-pay-package-wbd-paramount-merger-1236757050\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">platinum parachute for the Paramount merger <\/a>was <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/04\/warner-bros-shareholders-back-sale-to-paramount-key-vote-1236868751\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejected <\/a>in a non-binding vote  by Warner Bros Discovery shareholders, California handed out some cash that could actually be of real help to the home of Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThat\u2019s $193 million to be very specific \u2013 which is less than a third of what WBD CEO Zas still stands to pocket if David Ellison\u2019s takeover of the iconic studio actually goes through. That\u2019s $193 million spread among 38 projects from the latest round of the Golden State\u2019s film and TV <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/tax-credits\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tax-credits\" data-tag=\"tax-credits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tax credits<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOr, as Bart Simpson would say: \u201c\u00a1Ay, caramba!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTo that, the sequel to 2007\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-simpsons\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-simpsons\" data-tag=\"the-simpsons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Simpsons<\/a> Movie is among the more than three dozen flicks, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/will-ferrell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_will-ferrell\" data-tag=\"will-ferrell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Ferrell<\/a>-produced Self-Help and the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/laverne-cox\/\" id=\"auto-tag_laverne-cox\" data-tag=\"laverne-cox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laverne Cox<\/a>-starring Black Is Blue, allocated tax incentives Thursday. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/09\/simpsons-new-movie-release-date-marvel-1236565221\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Set to be released on July 23 next year<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/20th-century\/\" id=\"auto-tag_20th-century\" data-tag=\"20th-century\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20th Century<\/a> Studios\u2019 Simpsons Movie 2 got $21.86 million from the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/california-film-commission\/\" id=\"auto-tag_california-film-commission\" data-tag=\"california-film-commission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California Film Commission<\/a> administered program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs you can see in the chart below of the 38 films that were conditionally allocated credits, as well as it did, the Simpsons sequel didn\u2019t get the biggest award this round. In fact, with an Untitled DreamWorks <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/animation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_animation\" data-tag=\"animation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Animation<\/a> Feature Film getting $24.7 million and an Untitled Paramount Crime Thriller (pick up a trend here?) topping the list with $25.8 million, Simpsons 2 was in third place. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-22-at-7.32.31\u202fPM.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"464\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLeaning into the big showing by animation, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/disney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney\" data-tag=\"disney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney<\/a> Television Animation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/phineas-ferb\/\" id=\"auto-tag_phineas-ferb\" data-tag=\"phineas-ferb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phineas and Ferb<\/a>\u00a0film snagged $3.45 million in this big screen round. The genre only recently became eligible for the Golden State credits since Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/gavin-newsom\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gavin-newsom\" data-tag=\"gavin-newsom\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gavin Newsom<\/a>\u2018s vast expansion of the program to $750 million annually last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThere\u2019s a \u2018toon payoff too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe animated films are estimated to hire 484 cast and crew members overall. On the hard bottom line, Simpsons 2 and the other animated features are projected to deliver $144 million in qualified expenditures throughout the state. In total, the 38 indie and studio projects will create over $800 million injection into California\u2019s economy, the CFC say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOr, in a town and state that has been hurt hard the past few years by a steep drop in production with jobs, shows and films moving elsewhere, as Gloria Sanchez Productions co-founder Ferrell said today:  \u201cWe\u2019re seeing real momentum again in California, and it\u2019s incredibly meaningful to be part of bringing production home and working with the crews who make this industry so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cCalifornia has always been a place where bold, authentic stories come to life, and being able to make this film here means we get to collaborate with some of the most talented crews and artists in the world while investing back into the creative community that makes this industry possible,\u201d Black Is Blue\u2018s Cox added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn that vein, the latest round for TV applicants just closed last week with approvals likely to be announced  around May 18. For features, the next application period, with all submissions being online only, starts on May 11. As for the program itself (called Program 4.0 by the CFC), tax incentives for the industry are almost certainly here to stay in California no matter who the next governor is.
