Meta also will not hire for 6,000 roles that are currently open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to an internal memo sent to employees Thursday and viewed by Bloomberg, Meta told staff that the cuts will begin on May 20. Reuters had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/meta-targets-may-20-first-wave-layoffs-additional-cuts-later-2026-2026-04-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">earlier reported<\/a> on Meta\u2019s plans for sweeping layoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we\u2019re making,\u201d chief people office Janelle Gale told employees, according to the memo. \u201cThis is not an easy tradeoff and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta spent tens of billions on its metaverse efforts, which largely <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/19\/well-there-goes-the-metaverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">failed<\/a>.
