Canada has its own trade irritants with the United States, including American tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said Thursday as the deadline for a review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA) nears.<\/p>\n

Carney\u2019s comments come days after reporting suggested the United States was seeking concessions<\/a> ahead of a renegotiation of the CUSMA<\/a> free trade agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are our trade irritants? There\u2019s a 50 per cent tariff on aluminum, 50 per cent tariff on steel,\u201d Carney said, adding that American tariffs on Canada\u2019s auto manufacturing industry and forest products sector were also among the \u201cirritants.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are more than irritants. Those are violations of our trade deal,\u201d Carney added.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged, though, that both sides had \u201ctrade irritants\u201d that needed to be ironed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s two parties in a negotiation. We\u2019re not sitting here taking notes and taking instruction from the United States,\u201d Carney told reporters in Ottawa Thursday.<\/p>\n

When asked what specific trade issues the U.S. has raised issues with, Carney pointed to \u201cprovincial actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are provincial actions, with respect to alcohol on the shelves,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In a social media post on Wednesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford doubled down on his ban on American booze.<\/p>\n

Following U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s announcement of tariffs on Canada, several Canadian provinces decided to pull millions of dollars of U.S. made alcohol off their shelves in February.<\/p>\n

Currently, all but two provinces \u2013 Alberta and Saskatchewan \u2013 have bans on the sale of U.S. booze.<\/p>\n

The U.S. alcohol industry has raised concerns over falling exports, with data from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States showing that U.S. booze exports to Canada fell 70 per cent in December, compared to the same period the year before.<\/p>\n

The U.S. government is taking note of Canada\u2019s booze bans. In a report on foreign trade barriers released last month, the U.S. Trade Representative said the provincial bans were raising \u201cserious concerns\u201d in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

The administration will continue to \u201cpress Canada\u201d to remove these bans as CUSMA talks shape up, the USTR report said.<\/p>\n

When asked if he would ask Ford to \u201ccool it,\u201d Carney said, \u201cHe\u2019s the client (for American alcohol). He\u2019s also the duly elected premier of Ontario. He\u2019s got a majority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some in the U.S. have a \u201cmisimpression\u201d of the degree to which Canada was reliant on the U.S., Carney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it is our biggest trading partner by far. We are also their second biggest trading partner. There is a symbiosis between the two,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanadians get that. I\u2019m not sure everyone south of the border understands that to the extent it is true,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Carney had said Canada would not make any more trade concessions to get to the table with the U.S. on trade talks.<\/p>\n

While heading into a Liberal caucus meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday, Carney was asked by reporters: \u201cwould Canada make any more concessions to get to the table with the U.S.?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carney said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

This came as CBC News reported that the Trump administration is demanding what amounts to an \u201centry fee\u201d \u2013 or a series of concessions \u2013 from Canada to engage in trade talks toward a revised Canada-United States-Mexico-Agreement (CUSMA).<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Carney said he didn\u2019t know where talk of an \u201centry fees\u201d was coming from.<\/p>\n

\u201c(It is) certainly not coming from me, It\u2019s not language I\u2019ve ever used and it\u2019s not language I\u2019ve ever heard from the President of the United States,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
