As the regular season winds down and drivers make a run to land a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series<\/a> playoffs, those outside the cutline are looking for wins.<\/p>\n

A win guarantees a spot in the playoffs unless there are more winners than spots available. The 16 spots go to the regular-season champion and then 15 drivers based on wins with tiebreakers by points.<\/p>\n

Right now, there have been 13 winners with three races remaining, so unless winless Tyler Reddick<\/a> makes up a 97-point deficit to win the regular-season title \u2014 a very unlikely scenario \u2014 everyone with a win will get in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The three races remaining in the regular season: Watkins Glen (road course), Richmond (0.75-mile oval) and Daytona (2.5-mile drafting oval). All three have the potential to see new winners but the odds are that at least one spot, if not more, will be available on points.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a breakdown of who\u2019s in and who\u2019s on the bubble when it comes to points and who needs a win.<\/p>\n

Guaranteed Spots<\/p>\n

Drivers with multiple wins, locked into the playoffs: Denny Hamlin<\/a> with four wins, Kyle Larson<\/a>, Christopher Bell<\/a> and Shane van Gisbergen <\/a>with three and William Byron<\/a> with two, including Sunday at Iowa. Chase Elliott<\/a>, Ryan Blaney<\/a> and Chase Briscoe<\/a> are also locked in because they have enough points that there is no way they can be last among those with one win.<\/p>\n

Denny Hamlin owns a series-high four wins this season after conquering Dover. <\/p>\n

Have A Win, No Worries<\/p>\n

These drivers might not be mathematically locked in yet with one win, but Reddick’s chances of winning the regular season title are extremely remote, so you can write them in: Bubba Wallace<\/a>, Ross Chastain<\/a>, Joey Logano, <\/a>Austin Cindric<\/a> and Josh Berry<\/a>. Berry is 38 points behind Cindric as the lowest driver in points with one win.<\/p>\n

No Win, Tiny Worry<\/p>\n

Tyler Reddick<\/a>. Reddick has a 59-point edge on the next winless driver (Alex Bowman<\/a>) and currently sits 122 points above the playoff cutoff. If there are three new winners (and he’s not one of them), he’d be out. But he’s in relatively good shape.<\/p>\n

On Points Bubble<\/p>\n

If there are two new winners, these drivers would most likely miss the field (unless they are among those winners). Here is how the bubble looks:<\/p>\n

Bowman (+63 on the current cutoff), Chris Buescher<\/a> (+23) and Ryan Preece<\/a> (-23).<\/p>\n

Must Win<\/p>\n

The other 19 drivers either need incredible runs and luck without a win or more likely a victory to make the playoffs: Kyle Busch<\/a> (-73), Ty Gibbs<\/a> (-87), AJ Allmendinger<\/a> (-118), Brad Keselowski<\/a> (-121), John Hunter Nemechek (-127), Carson Hocevar<\/a> (-131), \u00a0Michael McDowell<\/a> (-134), Erik Jones<\/a> (-138), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (-176), Zane Smith<\/a> (-179), Austin Dillon<\/a> (-190), Justin Haley<\/a> (-196), Todd Gilliland<\/a> (-207), Daniel Suarez<\/a> (-211), Ty Dillon<\/a> (-226), Cole Custer<\/a> (-283), Noah Gragson<\/a> (-291), Riley Herbst<\/a> (-305) and Cody Ware<\/a> (-420).<\/p>\n

Of those drivers, eight have never won a Cup race: Gibbs, Nemechek, Hocevar, Gilliland, Ty Dillon, Gragson, Herbst and Ware.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Watkins Glen Outlook<\/p>\n

Of drivers who need a playoff spot, Busch (2008, 2013), Allmendigner (2014) and Buescher (2024) have won at Watkins Glen. Keselowski has a second, Bowman and Hocevar and Suarez have a best of third, while Jones has a fourth and Smith has a fifth.<\/p>\n
