He is just the second Bears player in franchise history to take home the honor, joining longtime <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/philadelphia-flyers\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View Philadelphia Flyers news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> goaltender Ron Hextall (1985-86).<\/p>\n<p>Protas, 19, led all AHL rookies in scoring with 66 points (29g, 37a) in 69 games and tied for sixth in the league in scoring among all players. Among just rookies, Protas also finished second in goals and assists, second in power-play goals (11), and first in points per game among players with at least 48 games played (.96).<\/p>\n<p>Protas learned Thursday\u2019s news after the Bears completed their morning skate ahead of Game 2 of their Atlantic Division First-Round playoff series against the Bridgeport Islanders. Head coach Derek King announced the honor, and Protas was mobbed by his cheering teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Protas <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/15\/ilya-protas-ahl-all-rookie-team-hershey-bears-capitals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">became just the sixth Hershey Bears player ever to be named to the AHL All-Rookie Team<\/a>. He was also <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/20\/ilya-protas-ahl-rookie-of-the-month-april\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named the AHL\u2019s Rookie of the Month for April<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/19\/ilya-protas-hershey-bears-awards-team-mvp-rookie-of-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took home four regular-season awards from the Bears, including Team MVP<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/02\/12\/ilya-protas-ahl-all-star-challenge-hershey-bears\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was the club\u2019s lone representative at the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bears, Protas\u2019 66 points were the most by a Bears rookie since Craig Fisher (79, 1990-91), and were the fourth-most by a teenager in AHL history. He is just the fifth rookie in team history to lead or tie for the team lead in scoring, joining Phil Maloney (79, 1948-49), Paul Guay (53, 1984-85), Fisher, and <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/player\/connor-mcmichael\/?ref=internal-player-link\" class=\"player\" title=\"View Connor McMichael&#039;s stats, bio, and status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor McMichael<\/a> (27, 2020-21). His 29 goals were the most in a single season by a teenage player for the Bears, breaking the previous mark of 20 established by R\u00e9al Chevrefils in 1951-52.<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 third-round pick of the <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/washington-capitals\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View Washington Capitals news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a> made his NHL debut against the <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/toronto-maple-leafs\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View Toronto Maple Leafs news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> on April 8, <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/08\/ilya-protas-first-nhl-point-capitals-debut-assists-goal-brother-aliaksei\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recording his first career point on a Cole Hutson empty-net goal<\/a>. He would then become just the second Capitals teenager in 42 years to <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/11\/ilya-protas-first-nhl-goal-capitals-penguins-pied-in-face\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record a three-point game after scoring his first NHL goal and adding two assists against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Protas was loaned back to the Bears for their AHL playoff run and recorded his first career point in the postseason in Hershey\u2019s 2-0 victory over Bridgeport in Game 1. The Bears can eliminate the Islanders, <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/21\/hershey-bears-end-bridgeport-islanders-playoffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effectively ending the team<\/a>, with a win in Game 2 at Giant Center on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the full press release from the Bears:<\/p>\n<p>Ilya Protas Named AHL\u2019s Most Outstanding Rookie for 2025-26 Season<\/p>\n<p>(Hershey, PA \u2013 April 23, 2026) \u2013 The American Hockey League announced today that Hershey Bears forward Ilya Protas has been voted the winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL\u2019s outstanding rookie for the 2025-26 season. He won four team awards, claiming the John Travers \/ Steve Summers Award (best plus-minus), Kenny Smith Memorial Player of the Game Award, Jack Gingrich Award (rookie of the year), and the Mountz Jewelers Team MVP Award.<\/p>\n<p>He was named the Upper Deck\/AHL Rookie of the Month for April as he paced the Bears and led all AHL rookies with 11 points (2g, 9a) in six games, while his nine assists tied for the league lead for the month. Protas notably recorded a goal and five assists in Hershey\u2019s 8-1 win at Hartford on April 4, marking the first six-point game by a Bears player since Mathieu Perreault recorded six assists on Nov. 14, 2010 vs. Binghamton, and the first by an AHL player since Alan Quine (3g, 3a) for Stockton at San Jose on Dec. 27, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Protas made his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals at Toronto on April 8, becoming the 71st Bears player to make his major league premiere with the Capitals since Hershey and Washington entered into an affiliation agreement prior to the 2005-06 season. Protas appeared in four games with the Capitals, contributing four points (1g, 3a) before being loaned back to Hershey.<\/p>\n<p>The 6\u20196\u2033, 225-pound center was Washington\u2019s third-round selection (75th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft and he is in the first year of a three-year, entry-level NHL contract signed with the Capitals on July 6, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This award, which was first presented by the AHL in 1947, honors the late Dudley (Red) Garrett, a promising young player who lost his life during World War II while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy.
