Brentford goalkeeper H\u00e1kon Valdimarsson has signed a new contract. The Iceland international has extended his stay with the Bees until the summer of 2030, with a club option for a further two years.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m delighted H\u00e1kon is signing a new deal,” said head coach Keith Andrews<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“People maybe don\u2019t recognise what goes on behind the scenes, and the importance of some of the players who are part of this journey; H\u00e1kon is a big part of the fabric of this football club, and he understands it.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s a very liked individual, he\u2019s got some very close connections within the club, he\u2019s an outstanding goalkeeper – we\u2019ve seen that when he\u2019s played this season – and we\u2019re really happy that he\u2019s signed a new deal.”<\/p>\n

Initially an outfield player for the KR academy in Iceland, Valdimarsson<\/a> made the switch to goalkeeping when he moved to Grotta\u2019s Academy in 2015 and in late 2017 fully transitioned into the role.<\/p>\n

He made his debut on the last day of the season in a 2-1 defeat to Leiknir Reykjav\u00edk, with Grotta already relegated.<\/p>\n

In the Icelandic third division, Valdimarsson was the first-choice goalkeeper in a season that saw Grotta achieve promotion.<\/p>\n

They achieved the feat again the following campaign, earning promotion to the Urvalsdelid, the top division of Icelandic football, for the first time in Grotta\u2019s history with Valdimarsson playing every game for them.<\/p>\n

After Grotta\u2019s relegation, Valdimarsson moved to Swedish club IF Elfsborg. He struggled to get a run of games in his first season but got his chance halfway through the following campaign and won the Goalkeeper of the Year award.<\/p>\n

The 6ft 4in keeper made his Iceland debut against Uganda in January 2021 and has earned a further 20 caps for his country.<\/p>\n

Valdimarsson kept 14 clean sheets in his last season at Elfsborg and earned the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League with Brentford in January 2024.<\/p>\n

Valdimarsson made his Premier League debut against Brighton and Hove Albion in December 2024, keeping a clean sheet after replacing the injured Mark Flekken in a goalless draw on the south coast.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old has made 12 appearances for Brentford in all competitions. He played a key role in the Bees\u2019 run to the Carabao Cup quarter-final this season, featuring in every tie and saving two penalties in a shoot-out victory over Aston Villa in the third round.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brentford goalkeeper H\u00e1kon Valdimarsson has signed a new contract.
