Here again there is a gap between public statements and
\non-the-ground facts. Microsoft\u2019s Community-First Initiative sounds great but does
\nnot have any form of independent accountability mechanism built in. OpenAI\u2019s
\nnew white paper signals a move toward progressive tech policy, but its
\npresident, Greg Brockman, has funneled millions into a SuperPAC opposing
\nstate-level AI regulation efforts<\/a>. OpenAI is also currently
\nsupporting a state legislature bill in Illinois<\/a>\u00a0(Senate Bill 3444) that would shield it from
\nlarge-scale harms caused by the AI models (Anthropic, for its part, opposes the
\nbill). <\/p>\n

These examples underscore the pattern that Ronan Farrow
\nnoted in his recent New
\nYorker<\/a> expos\u00e9 about Sam Altman\u2014that he would regularly publicly support
\none position and then quickly reverse course when it seemed like doing so would
\nbenefit his company. <\/p>\n

If Altman, Amodei, and their Big Tech peers want to rebuild
\npublic trust and create a genuine technology that benefits the public, then
\nthe path forward isn\u2019t another white paper or postulating about the existential
\nrisks of their technology. It\u2019s sustained, verifiable action: genuine
\ntransparency about what their products can do, a willingness to accept
\nmeaningful regulation and responsibility even at financial cost, and real
\ndemocratic input from communities on the growth of data centers. Otherwise, this
\nburgeoning AI populism movement will continue to scale up\u2014as will the
