{"id":604157,"date":"2026-04-24T18:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T18:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/604157\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T18:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T18:55:08","slug":"cognizant-classic-affected-by-recent-pga-tour-layoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/604157\/","title":{"rendered":"Cognizant Classic Affected by Recent PGA Tour Layoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6w\">The Cognizant Classic of the Palm Beaches has been affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/pga-tour-layoffs-restructuring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the layoffs that were confirmed on Thursday<\/a> by the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6z\">Todd Fleming, the event\u2019s tournament director, was among the 56 PGA Tour employees who were laid off on Thursday. The event is expected to proceed in 2027 with an interim director.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"72\">The Cognizant, which dates to 1972 when it was first called the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic, has been run by PGA Tour Events\u2014formerly Championship Management\u2014for the past three years.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"75\">That arm of the Tour runs several tournaments, including the Players Championship, the Tour Championship and the upcoming Cadillac and Truist Championships.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7b\">Those events have Tour staff in charge and in key leadership roles, unlike more than two dozen other events on the PGA Tour that are owned and operating by local non-profit organizations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7e\">Nico Echavarria won this year\u2019s Cognizant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/nico-echavarria-steals-cognizant-classic-shane-lowry-collapses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a thrilling finish<\/a>, but the event has been plagued by a poor date on the calendar. It\u2019s stuck between two signature events, making it difficult to attract a strong field, despite its local ties to players.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7h\">The tournament has been played at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens since 2007.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7k\">The Tour has been restructuring since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/2024\/02\/01\/pga-tour-massive-investment-the-question-is-how-to-grow-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">it became a for-profit entity<\/a> two years ago. CEO Brian Rolapp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/brian-rolapp-outlines-major-pga-tour-changes-events-fields-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">outlined a future plan<\/a> that would see tiers of events with a more streamlined schedule. The Cognizant could fall into the second category, although no decisions have been made.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7n\">The Tour earlier this week said that the season-opening events in Hawaii <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/pga-tour-will-not-return-iconic-golf-state-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">would not take place<\/a> next year.
