Bruno Fernandes has said ‘sorry’ to Jamie Carragher<\/a> after bringing up his penalty miss for England<\/a> against Portugal<\/a> at the 2006 World Cup<\/a>. During an interview with Wayne Rooney<\/a>, Fernandes<\/a> recalled celebrating as a boy the moment Carragher’s spot kick was saved by Ricardo, who also denied Steven Gerrard<\/a> and Frank Lampard<\/a> in the quarter-final shootout.<\/p>\n The Liverpool<\/a> legend initially scored his penalty but was forced to take it again after not waiting for the referee’s whistle. The second time around, Ricardo got the better of him and Portugal booked their place in the semis, ultimately losing to France<\/a>.<\/p>\n Rooney had been sent off earlier in the game for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho<\/a>, with Cristiano Ronaldo<\/a> infamously winking at his Manchester United<\/a> team-mate as he walked off the pitch in Germany. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show<\/a>, Fernandes explained: “Obviously 2006, everyone remembers because of Cristiano and Wayne’s little bit of fire.<\/p>\n “(It) ends up with Jamie Carragher missing the penalty. I can get on you with that penalty. When I miss a penalty, don’t say anything about it, please.”<\/p>\n In 2021, Carragher opened up on his heartbreak in response to Bukayo Saka<\/a>, Jadon Sancho<\/a> and Marcus Rashford<\/a> receiving vile racist abuse for missing penalties in the final of Euro 2020<\/a>. In his column for The Telegraph<\/a>, the former Liverpool centre-back said: “Sven Goran Eriksson<\/a> summoned me and gave me one job: to dispatch a spot-kick as convincingly as I had in every practise session.<\/p>\n “I had not missed a penalty in six weeks. ‘You’ll take the fourth’, Eriksson told me. Not a problem.
