{"id":6049,"date":"2025-07-13T06:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T06:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/6049\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T06:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T06:33:08","slug":"the-us-economy-added-139000-jobs-in-may-slightly-more-than-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/6049\/","title":{"rendered":"The US economy added 139,000 jobs in May, slightly more than expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkra7lq00003b6mq1vdm38m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The long-resilient labor market slowed down a little in May, adding 139,000 jobs, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksatvv00053j6njyg86zuq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month\u2019s job gains, which came in slightly more than expected, marked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/02\/economy\/what-to-expect-from-fridays-jobs-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a retreat from April<\/a>, which was downwardly revised to 147,000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksc2jm00073j6nzhdphe11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, and wage gains continued to outpace inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkx9t9l003w3j6ngc65z2jj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those two numbers on their own \u2014 the monthly payroll gain and the unemployment rate \u2014 indicate that the US labor market is cooling and not collapsing. However, the guts of the report indicate that fissures may be spreading, some economists warn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkxi3jb00443j6ni3ctu8rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t want to play Debbie Downer by just reading the headlines and concluding nothing to worry about,\u201d Gregory Daco, EY-Parthenon\u2019s chief economist, told CNN. \u201cIn my opinion, we are starting to see an acceleration of labor market slowdown.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkswtmb00123j6nrw1hdyej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists were expecting the economy to have added 130,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate held at 4.2%, according to FactSet consensus estimates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkrnvkj00003j6n9tcsfqzt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Friday\u2019s report painted a picture of a \u201csteady but cautious\u201d labor market in the face of swelling economic uncertainty, said Ger Doyle, regional president for North America at employment firm ManpowerGroup.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkt1v04001d3j6norhxacn1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping policy moves, especially a whipsaw approach to massive import tariffs, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/30\/economy\/us-consumer-sentiment-may-final\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">driven consumer sentiment lower<\/a>, rattled markets and clouded businesses\u2019 lines of sight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkssvy2000g3j6nkc4epknu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is not a freeze, but a temporary chill,\u201d Doyle wrote in commentary Friday. \u201cEmployees are staying put, employers are holding steady, and everyone is waiting for clearer signs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbktla4r001s3j6n08fml6sx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the pace of job growth remains fairly solid, this year\u2019s gains were even softer than initially thought,  Friday\u2019s report showed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkttpwy00273j6nut22a5s7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March\u2019s and April\u2019s gains were revised down by a combined 95,000 jobs, resulting in employment increasing by an average monthly clip of nearly 124,000 jobs this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbku0ubv002h3j6nda6qly5m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That may be above the 100,000 threshold (below which would be an indicator of potential weakness), but, excluding recession years, it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/01\/business\/us-jobs-report-preview-april\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lowest average monthly gain<\/a> for January through May in the past 30 years, an analysis of BLS data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksx4i500173j6nnulbbvtz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the years following the economy-upheaving pandemic, job growth has slowed, but it has not collapsed. The gains have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/10\/economy\/us-jobs-report-december-final\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remained solid enough<\/a> to fuel consumer spending and put the economy on track for a \u201csoft landing\u201d of reining in inflation without triggering a recession.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkyu2ys004y3j6nknewnzzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            May\u2019s jobs report marks the 53rd consecutive month that the US economy has added jobs, the second-longest streak of employment expansion on record (behind the post-Great Recession\/pre-Covid market of late-2010 to early 2020), BLS data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbktbed1001i3j6nj3vgtvtw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, economists have warned that the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/01\/business\/china-response-trump-us-trade-truce-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frenetic trade policy<\/a> and other actions \u2014 including drastic cutbacks to federal spending, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/26\/politics\/federal-workers-benefits-health-insurance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">layoffs of government workers<\/a>, and reductions in immigration \u2014 not only threaten those soft landing odds but also heighten recession risks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkteawl001l3j6n40124j9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe May jobs report still has everyone waiting for the other shoe to drop,\u201d Daniel Zhao, Glassdoor\u2019s lead economist, wrote Friday. \u201cThis report shows the job market standing tall, but as economic headwinds stack up cumulatively, it\u2019s only a matter of time before the job market starts straining against those headwinds.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksw1h5000r3j6nfkqi9hlg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not knowing the size and breadth of tariffs (but knowing they very well might change), for example, has hindered businesses\u2019 abilities to operate and plan: They don\u2019t know what their costs will be in three months, let alone three days from now; and it\u2019s even more unclear whether consumers will keep spending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksvje4000p3j6nuj6aus3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Outlooks have quickly become opaque.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbksul5x000m3j6nwb156mun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scores of the largest public US companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/04\/business\/how-corporate-america-is-responding-to-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have suspended their forecasts<\/a> for future earnings, temporarily blinding analysts and investors. And small businesses that have little room for error have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/20\/economy\/us-small-businesses-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left frozen in their tracks<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbktjcrh001o3j6npyh2xvil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although layoffs remain low, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/04\/economy\/us-private-sector-hiring-adp-may\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hiring has slowed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/03\/economy\/us-job-openings-layoffs-jolts-april\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">workers are staying put<\/a>, slowing the all-important \u201cchurn\u201d behind a healthy labor market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkttvli002b3j6n00ebz32i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe labor market is revealing fragility,\u201d Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, told CNN in an interview. \u201cThere\u2019s no margin for error when you\u2019ve got a low pace of hiring, a low pace of quits.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkvq1zi002q3j6nyzmvzaot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Friday\u2019s jobs report showed that opportunities dwindled for many workers. Almost the entirety of the month\u2019s employment gains (nearly 91%) was concentrated in just two sectors: health care and social assistance, and leisure and hospitality.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkvttex002v3j6ni8kjmgin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Half of all major industries added jobs in May (or lost jobs, if one\u2019s a glass-half-empty type of person), according to the BLS\u2019 employment \u201cdiffusion index.\u201d Across manufacturing, only 41.7% of industries added jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkw6b2h002z3j6noxsdshjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen manufacturing is losing jobs and the diffusion index suggests those losses are broad, it\u2019s more indicative of an industry-wide phenomenon, and could warrant concern for the broader economy,\u201d Elizabeth Renter, NerdWallet\u2019s senior economist, wrote in a note Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwb50500353j6nlkfuutge@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Overall last month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/10\/business\/manufacturing-us-jobs-trump-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">manufacturing sector<\/a> lost 8,000 jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwbvuq00383j6nz6ef3uil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The largest job losses in May, however, occurred in the federal government, which saw its employment bloodletting worsen due to the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to slash the federal workforce and gut agencies and spending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwdsxl003b3j6noz8mcd4a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The federal government has posted job losses for four consecutive months, dropping 13,000 jobs in February, 11,000 in March, 13,000 in April, and another 22,000 in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwmenp003e3j6ncdpdj8bb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s more to come on that front. The bulk of the losses to date likely reflect early retirements versus Department of Government Efficiency-driven layoffs, Swonk said. The losses from the latter could be spread out over many months to come: Not all federal workers were laid off immediately and other actions are being challenged in court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwn2jd003h3j6naztf92ww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The federal workforce represents a tiny share of overall employment; however, Trump\u2019s federal cuts appear to causing collateral damage in the private sector, Swonk said, noting job losses at scientific labs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwn6ft003k3j6n46qj4b0r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            BLS data shows that scientific, research and development services lost 3,900 jobs in May, which followed a 4,400-job loss in April. On a year-to-date basis, that industry is running in the red for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkw8wev00323j6n3m3p5n45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The BLS\u2019 monthly snapshot of the labor market is composed of two surveys: One of businesses (which measures employment, hours and earnings), and one of households (which provides demographic data and feeds into the all-important unemployment rate).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkwyl5e003q3j6no7f1nzzi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the household survey tends to have more volatility, May\u2019s readings from that particular wing of the report rang more alarm bells than usual.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkx8jmd003t3j6ndeqtvzh3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unemployment rate didn\u2019t budge, but more workers left the labor market. The labor participation rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 62.4%. And while the labor force losses were broad-based, they were more heavily concentrated in women over the age of 55 and men of prime working age (25 to 54), Swonk said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkxikgv004a3j6nrtnt9y0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The household survey also indicated that more people who were not working were instead in school or training.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkxo2tz004d3j6n46gdt33o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat tends to be something that happens when the labor market weakens,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkydn56004l3j6nmshvlh8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for now, the labor market is \u201cgood enough\u201d and \u201cstrong enough\u201d to keep the Federal Reserve in its holding pattern as higher tariffs have reignited concerns about inflation, Wells Fargo economists wrote in a note to clients Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkz3hmw00543j6nnoa8i0lo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Key inflation data is due out next week with the release of the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkyp60a004p3j6nb9dk0tbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat said, with both the soft and hard data on the labor market showing employment conditions softening, we still expect [Fed policymakers] to be cutting later this year,\u201d they wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbkyt4ht004s3j6nqur8066y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump, however, reiterated Friday that he\u2019d like to see interest rates go down sooner than later.
