Souther apparently didn’t realize the potential of “New Kid in Town” when he first played it for the band, according to Rolling Stone.

“Everyone looked at me: ‘Man, that’s a single, that’s a hit. Where’s that been?’” Souther said later. “I didn’t know what else to do with it.”

Thankfully, Glenn Frey and Don Henley had plenty of ideas for the tune, and together, the trio finished writing “New Kid in Town.” As Henley explained in the liner notes of the 2003 Eagles compilation album The Very Best Of, the lyrics were a reflection on “the fleeting, fickle nature of love and romance” and the “fleeting nature of fame, especially in the music business.”

“We were basically saying, ‘Look, we know we’re red-hot right now but we also know that somebody’s going to come along and replace us — both in music and in love,” Henley wrote.

In a Songfacts interview, Souther concurred, saying, “We were just writing about our replacements.”

Indeed, the song tells the all-too-familiar tale the rise and fall of a “new kid” who goes from being the next big thing to yesterday’s news:

“There’s talk on the street, it’s there to remind you / Doesn’t really matter which side you’re on / You’re walking away and they’re talking behind you / They will never forget you ’til somebody new comes along / Where you been lately? / There’s a new kid in town / Everybody loves him, don’t they? / He’s holding her and you’re still around”

The Eagles had the bestselling classic rock album of all time

Of course, as time has shown, the Eagles didn’t really have anything to worry about in terms of being replaced. Nearly 50 years since the Eagles hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 26, 1977, with “New Kid in Town,” the band’s Their Greatest Hits album is still the bestselling classic rock album of all time.

Released ahead of Hotel California on February 17, 1976, Their Greatest Hits includes ten tracks from their first four albums (such as “Take It Easy,” “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Witchy Woman”) and spent five weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 (and 455 weeks on the charts overall).
