This is all about Microsoft <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/04\/07\/microsoft-now-forces-windows-upgrade-on-millions-of-pcs\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/04\/07\/microsoft-now-forces-windows-upgrade-on-millions-of-pcs\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"forcing updates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">forcing updates<\/a>, restarts and shutdowns. And it affects more than a billion of its users.<\/p>\n<p>Two key complaints &#8220;persistently pop out,\u201d posted Microsoft\u2019s Aria Hanson in a <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows-insider\/2026\/04\/24\/your-windows-update-experience-just-got-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows-insider\/2026\/04\/24\/your-windows-update-experience-just-got-updated\/\" aria-label=\"blog\">blog<\/a> on Friday. \u201cDisruption caused by untimely updates and not enough control over when updates happen.\u201d Not any more.<\/p>\n<p>All change for your PC.<\/p>\n<p>NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Hanson is \u201cexcited to share&#8221; the improvements to Windows Update \u201cnow starting to roll out\u201d as a &#8220;direct result of your feedback.\u201d Windows users now have \u201cmore control&#8221; over their PCs, while keeping devices &#8220;secure by design and by default.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShutdown, Restart on your terms,\u201d Microsoft says. \u201cRestarting or shutting down your PC should always be simple, predictable, and on your terms \u2013 even with updates waiting to be installed.\u201d And that sums up the change.<\/p>\n<p>The point-by-point updates coming to your PC are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Skip updates immediately during the out of box experience (OOBE)Extend update pauses as many times as you needAlways-available options to shut down and restart without updatingMore insights on available updates so you can make more informed installation decisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is good news for Windows 11 users, which now number <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/windows\/microsoft-tells-us-windows-11-has-hit-a-billion-users-and-if-youre-confused-because-you-thought-it-was-a-failing-os-heres-whats-going-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/windows\/microsoft-tells-us-windows-11-has-hit-a-billion-users-and-if-youre-confused-because-you-thought-it-was-a-failing-os-heres-whats-going-on\" aria-label=\"more than one billion\">more than one billion<\/a> of Microsoft\u2019s install base, a number set to grow with the next Windows 10 upgrade deadline less than six months away, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/windows\/extended-security-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/windows\/extended-security-updates\" aria-label=\"when the ESU comes to an end\">when the ESU comes to an end<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/04\/25\/microsoft-is-finally-giving-you-full-control-over-windows-11-updates-hands-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/04\/25\/microsoft-is-finally-giving-you-full-control-over-windows-11-updates-hands-on\/\" aria-label=\"Windows Latest\">Windows Latest<\/a>, this change \u201cfixes some of the most frustrating parts of updates, which are the updates themselves. In fact, I wasn\u2019t expecting such a drastic change of heart from the company that was infamous for frustrating its users with multiple updates a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yet here we are \u2014 kudos to Microsoft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"All change for your PC.
