{"id":605811,"date":"2026-04-25T15:24:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/605811\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T15:24:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:24:40","slug":"iran-is-suffering-in-a-stand-off-with-the-us-but-may-be-betting-trump-will-blink-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/605811\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran is suffering in a stand off with the US \u2013 but may be betting Trump will blink first"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebs68j000x2dp7c0ywee23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/23\/politics\/us-military-plans-iran-targets-strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">naval blockade<\/a> on Iran is strangling the Islamic Republic\u2019s main economic corridors \u2013 leaving Tehran facing a looming oil storage crisis and its citizens grappling with rising food prices and surging unemployment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe000083d5sgadn5lr5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet unless Washington is prepared to impose its naval blockade for months longer, it will be difficult to completely dismantle an Iranian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/24\/politics\/us-freezes-cryptocurrency-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economy<\/a> that has spent years adapting to US pressure and crippling sanctions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe100093d5s3jpfp59r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And as much as Iran is suffering, its leaders will be aware that Trump is under pressure too, with the US president facing growing backlash over the war domestically and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/22\/politics\/midterm-strategy-trump-democrats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crucial midterms<\/a> looming. Tehran may have calculated that Trump will blink first.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000a3d5sq4v1ef9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only three months ago, the Iranian government was on the brink of collapse after people took to the streets nationwide to protest the poor handling of the economy. That same government was given a lifeline when the US and Israel launched its attacks, and it is now using the pretext of war to justify dire economic conditions to a nation of 92 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-01-12t170701z-85624673-rc2axian621k-rtrmadp-3-iran-economy-protests.JPG\" alt=\"Cars burn in a street during a protest over the collapse of the currency's value, in Tehran, Iran on January 8.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000b3d5sy0de8n1x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIran had already faced the maximum pressure campaign in Trump\u2019s first term, and it was forced to cut its oil production by half,\u201d Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, CEO of the think-tank Borse and Bazaar, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoef70xn00033b6qngrfgahj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf the blockade is in place for months, it will definitely impact the economic outlook for Iran, but the Iranian expectation is that the US itself cannot tolerate that pressure for that long.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000c3d5s68tho8ng@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What began as a blockade of Iranian ports more than ten days ago has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/22\/middleeast\/iran-tanker-boarding-indian-ocean-analysis-intl-hnk-ml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanded globally<\/a>, with every ship tied to Iran facing scrutinous monitoring by US naval forces throughout its voyage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000d3d5sb8jtf721@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the main outcomes of the blockade would be to render Iran incapable of exporting its main commodity. If the country cannot shift the millions of barrels of oil it produces daily, it could be forced to cut production. Crude oil and petroleum product exports are Iran\u2019s primary source of foreign currency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000e3d5sr9btfyh0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Iran could probably sustain current oil production for another two to three months before storage issues become \u201ca significant consideration,\u201d Batmanghelidj said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000f3d5sq2fehy6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Iran also still has plenty of oil storage space remaining onshore, shipping analytics firm Kpler said, noting it has almost 30 million barrels of headroom, which means it\u2019s still weeks away from its limit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000g3d5sifwtozwl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It could even push storage capacity longer if it finds other methods of offloading the stored oil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebyxe1000h3d5sy6w1wzr7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One option Iran is exploring is using its retired crude tankers. A 30-year-old large carrier called NASHA was observed sailing towards oil storage terminals on Kharg island to possibly offload oil and act as floating storage, a maritime intelligence company that tracks crude oil shipments Tankertrackers.com said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzd46000m3d5slq0i7xqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Until a ceasefire was declared on April 7, the US and Israel had been conducting near-daily strikes on Iran, killing top officials and targeting core infrastructure including steel plants, petrochemical facilities and highways linking cities together.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000o3d5s6z5s01bj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For much of the war, a key US goal was reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz. We are in control. Nothing in. Nothing out,\u201d Hegseth told a news conference Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000q3d5si8xlew0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US move came in response to Tehran\u2019s decision to block the Strait of Hormuz and impose an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/28\/middleeast\/iran-strait-of-hormuz-toll-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unofficial toll<\/a> on ships passing through this critical maritime chokepoint, which facilitates more than a fifth of the world\u2019s oil and gas exports, causing oil prices to surge sharply.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000r3d5s2f0zgok6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Strait cannot operate under threat. And let\u2019s call payment for safe passage what it is: A protection racket. Hormuz belongs to the world. It must be returned to the world. Exactly as it was,\u201d Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO \u200bof Abu Dhabi\u2019s \u2060state oil giant \u200bADNOC, said on X last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000s3d5skrf9053t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Southern Iran is the backbone of the country\u2019s trade and economy, handling the vast majority of its oil exports through terminals. While Iran has land borders for some overland trade, nothing compares to the southern coastline. Kharg Island alone exports around 90% of Iran\u2019s crude while other locations dotted along the coastline give Iran options to ship its oil beyond the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777130680_269_2026-03-09t133829z-1021977946-rc211kaxtlru-rtrmadp-3-iran-crisis-oil-kharg-20260326130902169.JPG\" alt=\"A satellite image shows an oil terminal at Kharg Island, Iran, on February 25.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1373\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000t3d5sbggiitqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ongoing US naval blockade heavily restricts these southern terminals even beyond the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000u3d5s3n4iz3zo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            War with Iran has also threatened the world\u2019s supplies of aluminum, plastics and rubber. The Middle East ships about 25% of the world\u2019s polypropylene and 20% of polyethylene, two of the most-used plastics. It also accounts for a quarter of the world\u2019s sulphur and 15% of its fertilizer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000v3d5s6sqwifno@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vessels coming from or going to Iranian ports have been turned around, Hegseth said, noting 34 vessels had been intercepted in the region as of Friday, with two other Iranian-linked ships seized in the Indo-Pacific. In public, at least, the US stresses it won\u2019t back down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzmw1000w3d5s0gwjg72w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA blockade as long as it takes, whatever President Trump decides,\u201d Hegseth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoebzxqq00103d5slq3oq7xk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Should Iran be compelled to turn to alternative import routes, such as its land borders or the Caspian Sea to the north, this could push the already escalating prices of goods even higher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoec0h0i00123d5sq7jxctej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One million jobs have already been lost in Iran, and the employment of two million people has been affected because of the war, state-affiliated media said, citing Iran\u2019s deputy labor minister, Gholamhossein Mohammadi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoec0h0i00133d5sq0asct08@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another 130,000 workers have lost their jobs after their factories were struck, Iran\u2019s Labor Ministry official Alireza Mahjoub told the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoec0h0i00143d5svw75qlcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Iranian government has maintained that there are no shortages of goods and that, despite \u201cpressures, sanctions, and maritime restrictions,\u201d the country\u2019s food supply chain is fully functioning with 85% of agricultural products and basic goods produced domestically.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The country\u2019s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, acknowledged that there are some shortages in fuel that require \u201ccareful planning\u201d and \u201cpublic cooperation,\u201d but described what the government has achieved as \u201cdivine grace.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoec0h0i00193d5sh7tus8so@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Iran\u2019s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen or heard from since his appointment last month, called on people in a written statement \u201cto be considerate of one another so that the pressures caused by shortages \u2013 which are a natural effect of any war \u2013 are reduced on different segments of society.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoec0h0i001a3d5sdf1kw2pm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This weekend has seen tentative signs of movement on talks, with US envoys expected to follow Iran\u2019s top diplomat to Pakistan, where mediators are keen to restart negotiations.
